1 A Brief overview of STN®
Mrs. Sunny Yu CAS Marketing Agent, iGroup in Beijing Patent Information Annual Conference of China September 9, 2010

2 STN® offers an unsurpassed collection of essential scientific and technical databases
STN databases are uniquely integrated so you can consult several at the same time with one query Highest-quality, standardized databases in one place Unified command language Value-added indexing by scientists Duplicate answers are easily removed from a multi-database search BIOTECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING MEDICAL SCIENCE MATERIALS SCIENCE PHARMACOLOGY PATENTS BUSINESS CHEMISTRY What is STN? STN is the Scientific and Technical Information Network. STN is an unsurpassed collection of essential science and technology databases that scientists and decision-makers have been using for more than 25 years to plan and develop their research projects. The STN databases have been standardized, so you can search the highest-quality databases, collected from different publishers from around the world, with a single command language. STN databases are also well integrated, allowing you to search multiple databases at the same time to search by topic, author name, publication, and so forth. The databases have also been grouped by discipline, or type of data, so you can easily search multiple STN databases for topics such as pharmaceuticals, or for specific types of data such as patents or chemical structure diagrams. 3 A division of the American Chemical Society
STN has databases of the highest quality, including the comprehensive chemistry databases from CAS A division of the American Chemical Society CAS... we are scientists, creating and delivering the most complete and effective digital information environment for scientific research and discovery A self-sustaining division of the American Chemical Society Publisher of Chemical AbstractsTM, the recognized reference for science and technology information. Producer of the world’s most comprehensive databases of chemistry and technology related information Operator of the STN Internationalsm online network Producer of STN Express®, STN® AnaVistTM, and SciFinder® Highest-quality indexing CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society Copyright 2010 American Chemical Society. 4 The main CAS databases are updated daily so you can access the latest reported scientific discoveries CAS REGISTRYSM – the world’s largest substance database thousands of new substances are added each day as reflected by the REGISTRY counter shown on the CAS web site (visit CAplusSM – an integrated chemical and scientific resource of journals, patents, and reputable web sources 3,000 document records added daily Approximately 3 million publications from journals, patents, and other sources have been indexed to date in 2010 Overview of slides, move into a review of 2009 CAS content enhancements CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society Copyright 2010 American Chemical Society. 5 Published chemistry is still accelerating as evidenced by CAS database growth in 2009
Well, the global economy may have been working in slow-motion last year, but the good news is that the number of research articles and patents added to our databases continues to accelerate. The news from CAS is very good: 2009 was another record-setting year for database and content building. More than 10 million small molecules were added to REGISTRY in 2009, for a total of 51.3 million. More than 1.2 million publications from journals, patents, and other sources were indexed in CA/CAplus, bringing total indexed publications to more than 28.7 million. CAplus now has a total of 5.5 million indexed patents. It’s also interesting to note that our more than 5.4 million reactions were added to our CASREACT database in 2009, to include nearly 22 million reactions. This translates to 31 percent more reactions available to researchers than the year before. CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society Copyright 2010 American Chemical Society. 6 CAS coverage of global patent authorities has expanded to 61 with the addition of Costa Rica
CAS’s coverage of Costa Rican (patent country code CR) patent documents includes kind codes A (patent applications) and will include U (utility model applications) from 2007 to date For the Republic of Argentina (patent country code AR), CAS now covers the following kind codes from 2006 to date: A (patent applications) A2 (divisional patent applications) A3 (additional patent application) A4 (independent utility model applications) A6 (additional utility model applications) CAS is continuously looking for new sources of quality information to add to its databases. CAS recently enhanced its extensive patent coverage by adding patent and patent family information from the Costa Rica Registry of Industrial Properties. At this at time, CAS expanded coverage of the Argentina National Institute of Industrial Properties. Costa Rican patent documents expand CAS’ already substantial coverage of patent authorities from smaller countries. Patent information from these smaller patent authorities is largely inaccessible to many patent searchers, and CAS is one of only a few information provides that cover smaller patent authorities. 7 50,000 World Traditional Medicine (WTM) patents now available in CAplus
A total of 22,000 World Traditional Medicine (WTM) patents from many different countries were recently added to CAplus, increasing the total number of these unique patents to 50,000. WTM records expand coverage of this unique type of prior art, which is gaining in importance within the pharmaceutical and consumer products industries. In addition, CAS recently added 22,000 patents containing substances from “traditional medicine.” The patents contain information on the active ingredients that researchers have identified in “folk remedies” from around the world. Perhaps needless to say these natural substances have increasing importance to the pharmaceutical industry. 8 We’re expanding our coverage of new sources to include JAM and ASAP manuscripts . . .
CAS is also expanding coverage of Just Accepted Manuscripts (or JAM), which are peer-reviewed and accepted for publication, but are posted online prior to technical editing, formatting for publication, and author proofing. “Just Accepted” manuscripts are not considered the final scientific version of record. The As Soon As Publishable (or ASAP) article, which has been technically edited and formatted, represents the final scientific article of record. The ASAP article has the same DOI as the “Just Accepted” manuscript. CAS ahead of print manuscript coverage now includes: American Institute of Physics (AIP) Springer Nature NRC (National Research Council of Canada) CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society Copyright 2010 American Chemical Society. 9 . . . as well as new web-only publications
CAS now covers more than 1,100 journals published exclusively on the web. These include: ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces ACS Chemical Neuroscience ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society Copyright 2010 American Chemical Society. 10 STN database producers continue to add more content
EMBASE Classic enhanced with 1.9M CAS RNs EMBASE adds unique MEDLINE® records Derwent databases add new patent thesaurus DWPI revises author abstract indexing and adds ALLSTR format FASTA/2 added to USGENE and PCTGEN INPADOC enriched with new SELECT fields INSPEC maps indexing schemes to WIPO IPC system MEDLINE extends coverage back to 1947 PATDPAFULL standardizes on STN formats STN database producers continue to enhance and expand their databases. I won’t go through all of these, but wanted to give you an impression of how much is happening. Recently, for example, EMBASE has expanded its indexing collection to more than 7,000 journals and increased the size of its database by 8.4 million records going back to 1948 by adding unique records from MEDLINE The MEDLINE backfile has been extended by an additional year back to 1947, adding providing an extra 63,839 records to MEDLINE’s coverage. 12 STN for the 21st Century Coming Soon!
CAS is working with customers to develop the new STN New STN will provide: Same critical search power that STN users depend on Same high-quality content and precision for which STN is well known New STN platform will run in parallel with current STN services for a few years to provide a comfortable transition Earlier this year, CAS and its partner FIZ Karlsruhe announced that a new STN platform will be introduced over the next two years. The new STN platform will provide a more modern interface and product architecture, while maintaining the critical search power and high quality content for which STN has become known.  The STN platform is being revitalized to improve on current areas of value: Continue to support complex customer needs Be able to adapt and deliver the growing volume of information Answer the demand for innovative information delivery The new platform will run in parallel with current STN services for a few years to provide a comfortable transition for users.  CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society Copyright 2010 American Chemical Society.
