Infotools Harmoni IHU: Constructions
September 2017 Presented by: Janine Takle

Overview Constructions are used to create new items in a project
Items can be constructed using items that already exist in the project, or with user entered values Once created, constructions are automatically updated when new sources are added Infotools Harmoni itself is source agnostic

Creating Headings

Creating Headings A new heading can be created using add heading in the edit menu The add heading option is only available if the selected item in the dictionary tree is a single axis or heading The heading is inserted above the selected item

Creating Axes There are 3 different ways to start creating a new axis … let’s have a look at them

Creating Axes A new axis with elements that already exist in another axis can be created either by selecting and dragging existing elements into space Elements can only be dragged out to create a new axis when one, or more, elements from the same axis are selected The new axis will be added to the data dictionary in the position the elements are dragged to

Creating Axes A new axis with elements combined from other axes can be created by using combine items in the construct menu The created axis appears above the first item selected to be included in the new axis The combine items option will only create a new axis when there are two, or more, unconstructed axes selected The ability to apply combine items to constructed axes will be available in upcoming versions

Creating Axes A new axis in which to create your own elements can be created by using new axis in the construct menu The created axis appears above the item selected The axis will not be saved into the dictionary until both the axis has a name, and there is at least one named element

Creating Elements

Creating Elements Existing unconstructed elements can be combined together into a new element using combine items The combined element appears above the first item selected for inclusion

Creating Elements Elements can be created in constructed axes using new element in the construct menu New elements appear below the element selected After defining an element there is also an option below the definition to add a new element

Defining Elements An element definition defines the condition that must be true for the data records to be included in the element The expression editor is the interface by which the definition is entered The expression editor supports both typing and dragging and dropping to build the expression When typing, the possible options are displayed for selection, use the arrow down key to highlight the option choice, and Enter to select it

Defining Elements An element can be defined using a single Axis.Element condition simply by dragging a single element into the expression editor Dragging in more than one element from the same axis into the definition assumes an or relationship across elements Dragging in elements from different axes into the definition assumes an and relationship

Defining Elements An element can be defined using any combination of Boolean Logic, including ands, ors, brackets and nots in the expression editor And decreases the number of data records being included Or increases the number of data records being included Brackets are used to determine the order of calculation Not is to be used with either and or or

Defining Elements Measures can be used in the definition of an element
When using measures, the condition is still identifying the condition that must be true in order for data records to be included in the new element A comparative operator must be used when using a measure to define an element, i.e. >, <, <=, >=, <>, =

Creating Measures

Creating Measures A new measure can be created by using new measure in the construct menu Measures contain a single value for each respondent Records to be excluded from the measure’s count need to be assigned a missing value 3.4e38 is Infotools Harmoni’s missing value Measures can be built using values from other measures, or from values entered explicitly in the definition

Creating Measures An if statement is an effective way of assigning different values to different data records The syntax for if is: if(condition, value if true, value if false) The value assigned to those records that satisfy the if condition (i.e. the condition is true), is different to the value assigned to those that don’t (i.e. the condition is false).

Creating Measures When there are more than 2 different values to assign, more if statements can be nested into the value if false For example, if we want to assign the Yes elements in the Question axis to have a value of 1, and the No answers a 0, while the Don’t Know responses, and those that didn’t give a response are not to be included in the measure, the syntax would be: if(Question.Yes, 1, if(Yes.No, 0, 3.4e38))

Creating Measures Measures can be defined using calculations, i.e.
addition using + subtraction using - multiplication using * division using / For example, a Total Alcohol Spend measure could be calculated by adding together the measures Off-License Spend and On- License Spend Off-License Spend + On-License Spend

Creating Weights

Creating Weight A new weight can be created by using new weight in the construct menu Weights contain a single value for each respondent Weights are defined using all the same techniques as used for defining measures

Tips & Tricks

Tips & Tricks Constructions can use items in one or many sources
Both conditions in an and relationship must exist in at least one source, or no records will be included in the construction Not all conditions in an or relationship need to exist in any one source in order for records to be included in a constructed element

Tips & Tricks The most reliable way of including an item in a complex definition is through typing to display the list of matching labels, then selecting them from the displayed list When typing the text to match, the possible matches are only displayed when they are similar, not identical

Tips & Tricks Related enhancements coming up in the roadmap:
Constructions from constructions Default weights Making a constructed weight a default weight Making a renamed weight a default weight Weight target matrix

Try it yourself

Try it yourself…? Use the sav files for Moon Landing found in Create a multiple response axis that combines together these axes, then remove the 0 element that contains all the respondents that said 0 (i.e. No) in at least one of contributing axes:

Try it yourself… Combine the age elements together to create fewer categories Create a new Target Segments axis with the following elements Frequent Flyer Retirees = 65+ Years and Visited the Moon more than twice Coastally Focused Females = Visited A Beach and A Marine Park/Reserve and not A geothermal park, A glacier, A national park, or Hot pools

Try it yourself… Create an Other Costs measure containing the amount spent that wasn’t on Airfares or Packages, i.e. the amount left after subtracting Airfares and Packages from Total Spend Create a Demographics heading and move Gender, Age, and Traveller Type into it Create a Gender Weight that adjusts the gender proportions to 50/50

Answers/Hints Try it yourself 3. Other Costs measure
Coastally Focused Females Frequent Flyer Retirees 2. Target Segments definitions Try it yourself

Answers/Hints To change this to 50/50 we need to assign all males a weight of (50/45) and all females need a weight of (50/55) Across all 3 Moon Landing sources, the Male/Female distribution is 45/55 5. Gender weight
