3. The United Nations (UN)
Began in 1945 to replace the League of Nations
As the Second World War drew to a close, a UN charter was drawn up by 50 countries, including Canada
Designed to promote co-operation among countries
Lester B. Pearson, Canada’s prime minister from 1963–1968, served as president of the UN General Assembly in 1952.
In 1956, he proposed and helped develop a UN peacekeeping force to find a diplomatic solution to the Suez Crisis in Egypt.
Pearson received the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize for the success of his peacekeeping solution.

8. The Avro Arrow
Avro Arrow (CF-105), an advanced, supersonic, twin-engined, all- weather interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe of Canada from 1949 until the government's controversial cancellation of the project in 1959. 
Needed to counter the threat of Soviet bombers over the Canadian North

It was projected that the Arrow could be the fastest plane ever built.
The specifications still rival the top planes today

12. Downfall of the Arrow
Because new systems had to be invented the cost rose quickly
The Canadian government scaled back its purchase order from to 100, making the cost per plane rise dramatically
The government was unable to sell the plane to the US because the US was moving to a missile based defense system
The Soviets developed ICBM’s which made the need for an interceptor to shoot down Soviet bombers questionable

13. Downfall of the Arrow The project was cancelled on 20 February 1959.
A.V. Roe bitterly fired 14,000 employees;
The government ordered all plans and prototypes destroyed
Almost all of the scientists and engineers left Canada to work in the US, many ended up working on the space program for NASA
Canada now had to rely on the US for its defense
