I am planning for my future using a solution focused approach
Year 11 – Feeling good and being me I am planning for my future using a solution focused approach © NHS Leeds CCG Partnership 2018
2
Learning outcomes Knowledge Skills
I can evaluate my own personal strengths and areas for development and use a solution focused approach to develop strategies to achieve targets in the future I can use a solution focused approach, with a partner, to develop strategies to achieve future goals 2
3
How we will work together
Can you remember the group agreement we have already talked about, let’s take a minute to think about them. Teacher notes Read these through with the children. Hopefully the group agreement will be displayed in the classroom already. 3
4
Timed Pair Share There is no failure, only feedback
5 minute pair and share discussion of statement. What does it mean? How would it be useful to use this view when working towards future goals? Tease out that feedback that shows when you are off track is just as useful as feedback that shows when you are on track, how you respond is important. 4
5
Let’s get started Stand up, put hands up and join someone to pair up!
Students stand up, put hands up and join someone to pair up. They tell each other 2 key strengths and an area for development - we did this in Y10 Are things the same? What has changed because of areas they have worked on? If things haven’t changed what have the barriers been? 5
6
Enormous Great Goals (EGGs)
Long term (5-25 years) You feel good when you think about them They strongly connect with your values They are very personal Card sort into examples of EGGs and non EGGs. Encourage students to consider what EGGs they could have and work towards. The clip is JK Rowling – get students to listen out for indicators that her goal was an EGG and to identify obstacles she overcame (remind them also that she sent Harry Potter to many publishers who all knocked it back before someone picked it up and went with it) Check back in with them re the concept that there is no failure only feedback–how does it apply here? Avoid the blame frame How long have I had this problem?
How does this problem limit me? Attempting to resolve a ‘problem’ situation through questions like… It involves you reactively moving away from what you don’t want can leave you feeling powerless, vulnerable and helpless (and in victim mode) What’s wrong? Why do I have this problem? Whose fault is it that I have this problem? What does this problem stop me from doing? Discuss in relation to JK Rowling clip. How might things have turned out differently if she had used the Blame Frame? 7
8
Instead try the Outcome Frame
Addressing a ‘problem’ situation through questions like… The Outcome Frame involves you proactively moving towards what you want. It helps to shift your mind-set to one of optimism, hope, empowerment and possibility What do I want? What is my part in getting it? Where, when and with whom do I want it? How will I know, specifically, that I have got there? When I get what I want, what else will improve? What resources do I have to help me achieve my desired outcome? What am I going to do to achieve my outcome? Pair and share – think again of the JK Rowling clip. What examples of outcome frame did she use? 8
9
Solution focused practice
In pairs use the outcomes framework to develop strategies to achieve targets in the future Break down your EGGS (if you have them into smaller goals) Students may need considerable prompting to stay thinking about strengths and resources rather than obstacles and barriers. 9
10
What stuck? On the sticky note write the main thing that will stick with you from this lesson Can be done as pair work or independently 10
11
Taking the learning away
Continue your personal reflection about your life goals and shorter term goals Notice if you go to a blame frame in your thinking – change it to an outcome frame 11
