1 LLO Addendum to Basic Laser Safety Training
LIGO-G V1 LLO Addendum to Basic Laser Safety Training LIGO Laboratory Safety This presentation contains some important LLO site-specific information that is to be read by those who certify for "Zone Access" status. LIGO Laboratory Safety LIGO-G V1

2 LIGO Laboratory Safety
Introduction Topics covered: Nominal Hazard Zones at LLO LVEA Entrance PSL Enclosure Laser Diode Room OSB Optics Lab HPLF Optics Lab VEAX Entrance VEAY Entrance There are several slides here that are intended to familiarize people with the laser safety measures that exist at LLO. Danger signs, status signs, locations of card readers, laser safety eyewear, phones and cameras are each shown in the LLO designated nominal hazard zones. LIGO Laboratory Safety LIGO-G V1

3 LIGO Livingston Observatory
Laser Vacuum Equipment Area (LVEA) Nominal Hazard Zones (NHZ) Entrance to LVEA Control Room (Operator) Pre-Stabilized Laser (PSL) Optics Lab Laser Safety Officer (LSO) Laser Diode Room (LDR) “Facility Access” permits access to office buildings. “Facility Access” does NOT permit access to any nominal hazard zones. “Zone Access” permits access to LVEA, VEAX and VEAY. “Zone Access” does NOT permit access to PSL, OSB Optics Lab, LDR, HPLF Optics Lab, TCS, or TMON or PCAL in VEAX or VEAY. “Laser Operator” permits access to all NHZ’s. “Laser Operator” status is necessary but not sufficient to operate any laser at LLO. Exit Card Reader Entrance Card Reader Laser Safety Glasses Laser Hazard Status Sign Telephone Extension 183 (LVEA Portable) Extension 180 Required Laser Safety Glasses OD => 1064nm (50W max) OD => 10.6μm (10,600nm) (35W max) Panic Button (Emergency Laser Shut-off) Danger Sign on LVEA Entrance Door Danger Sign – identifies the wavelengths and OD requirements for laser safety eyewear. Laser Hazard Status Sign – identifies the CURRENT STATUS of the area about to be entered. Laser Safety Glasses – are the appropriate glasses for the wavelengths present and OD requirements. Panic Button – will completely shut off all lasers in the LVEA. Entrance Card Reader – must be swiped before entry. Wait for the green light to open the door! Exit Card Reader – must be swiped before exit. Wait for the green light to open the door! Telephones – are portable phones that can be used in the LVEA. LIGO Laboratory Safety LIGO-G V1
