(A Greek Myth) How Prometheus gave fire to men

2 Prometheus We will be reading a short story about Prometheus, a mythological character, who was faced with a conflicting decision. Do you agree or disagree that our journeys in life involve conflicting decisions?

3 Prometheus...Vocabulary
Titans-- The noun titan comes from Greek mythology, in which the Titans were a race of gods. Zeus-- the supreme deity of the ancient Greeks Prometheus--a titan in Greek mythology, meaning Forethought Epimetheus--a titan in Greek mythology,meaning Afterthought Mount Olympus-- the dwelling of the Gods Fennel-- an aromatic yellow-flowered European plant of the parsley family, with feathery leaves. Hearth--the floor of a fireplace Hercules--a mythical Greek hero renowned for his great strength

4 Text Dependent Questions-Answer in Complete sentences
Since Prometheus actually means “forethought,” find evidence in the myth of Prometheus portraying this trait. In the myth, Zeus responds to Prometheus’s request for fire by the following: “I will not! Not one spark will I share with them!” Find this in the text and read what Zeus continues to say. What does his response overall reveal about his character? How does the central idea of this story relate to issues we face in our present society? What challenges would mankind have faced if Prometheus had not stolen fire from the gods? How is suspense for the reader created through the different points of view of the characters? Why did Zeus surmise that Prometheus had been the one to steal fire from the gods? Find text evidence to support your claim.

Annotate the myth as you read. Summarize passages, identify figurative language, ask questions, define words…

Compare and contrast Prometheus and his brother, Epimetheus. You may use a graphic organizer or you may write a paragraph.

What kind of figurative journey was Prometheus following? Pick from the following and support your choice. Was the sacrifice worth it? A journey of ego A journey of pity A journey of integrity A journey of hope Create a visual showing a “Journey of Choices”. Incorporate into your visual the conflicts involved with the choices, the consequences and the risks. Be sure to include the worthiness of the choices on the journey. Explain how Prometheus’s decision is life altering for himself and the world around him
