What is a mixture and a solution?
2
What is a mixture? Mixture – a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined. Ex. Punch, tea, Chex Mix, random crayons in a box.
3
How are fruit punch and a bowl of party mix both mixtures? ?
Homogeneous – describes something that has a uniform structure or mixture throughout. Heterogeneous – composed of different quantities of the different components.
4
What is a solution? Solution – A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. Solutions can exist as Solids liquids gases
5
Solvent vs. Solute Solvent – the substance doing the dissolving.
Solute – the substance that is dissolved in a solution. Example: Sugar-water solution solvent = water solute = sugar
6
Miscible vs. Immiscible
Miscible – two liquids that dissolve in each other (water and ethanol) Miscible = mix Immiscible – liquids that are not soluble in one another (example: gasoline and water). Immiscible = NO mix
7
Pure water? Aqueous solutions – water samples containing dissolved substances. (pure water never exists in nature because water dissolves too many substances).
