1 Modeling 1-Step Equations
With candy!

2 Here are the pieces = -x = -1 (upside down) = +x = +1

3 How it works Build each equation using the candy Ex: x + 4 = 6 =

4 How it works Find zero pairs
When you have the same thing on both sides of the equal sign, they are called zero pairs. Zero pairs are also formed by positive and negative numbers on the same side of the equal sign. = There are 4 skittles on both sides so there are 4 zero pairs.

5 How it works Take out zero pairs =
Since a pink starburst is +x and skittles are +1, we have x = 2 Solution to the equation: x = 2

6 You Try! Model and solve. 3 + p = 8 p − 6 = −5

7 Try this x − 7 = 13 = Skittles and m&ms are not the same so we must create zero pairs to isolate the x.

8 Add 7 skittles to each side
= Skittles and m&m’s form zero pairs

9 Take out zero pairs = So x = 20

10 You try! Model and solve 3 – x = -2 x + 4 = -6

11 What about this? -3x = 9 = So how many skittles (1’s) are there per starburst (x)? -x = 3 so x = -3

12 You try! Model and solve. 2x = -18 -4x = -16
