CONSERVATION IMPORTANCE AND TYPES
2
Heritage and Conservation
Our nation's history has many facets, and historic conservation helps tell these stories. Sometimes historic preservation involves celebrating events, people, places, and ideas that we are proud of; other times it involves recognizing moments in our history that can be painful or uncomfortable to remember. Importance of Conservation links our heritage to living traditions (make us feel that it still exists) Keeping architecture and towns for future generations and sustainable development What do we conserve religious architecture – mosques, temples, churches Monumental architecture - forts and palaces, Non – monumental architecture - houses, schools, factories, shops, bridges, etc
3
Conservation Definition : the process through which the material, historical and design integrity of mankind’s built heritage are prolonged through careful planned interventions. Deals with issues of prolonging the life and integrity of architectural character, such as form and style, and its constituent materials such as brick, stone, glass, metal and wood.
4
Conservation Conservation covers all actions aimed at safeguarding historical buildings and towns. It includes: retaining the building’s significant historical, social, aesthetic and technological qualities ensuring that all actions are carried out with the least possible intervention researching, recording/cataloguing and retaining all knowledge and information related to the building’s context, history, manufacture, use, acquisition, donors, etc documenting the object in detail, which may include photographing it recording and retaining all information related to the treatment of the building.
6
ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVATION
PRESERVATION RESTORATION ADAPTIVE REUSE RECONSTRUCTION MAINTENANCE ARCHITECTURAL PRESERVATION Process to protect and maintain buildings in their current state Prevent further damage and deterioration to them.
7
ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION
Returning to a known earlier state without the introduction of new materials. It should be restored to its original character. Historic buildings must be improved and sometimes even completed using current day materials, design and techniques.
8
ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION
re-creating, with historic materials and techniques, missing features Restoration usually means: removing or covering up signs of wear and use, through actions such as painting, replacing and or reconstructing missing or worn parts, with ‘spare parts’ and/or new materials or parts restoration must not destroy or diminish the history, and therefore significance, of the item – reversible restoration responsible restoration applies minimal intervention.
9
ADAPTIVE REUSE / REVITALISATION/ REHABILITATION
To conserve historic buildings or districts while putting them into good use perfect way to breathe new life into an old building, while conserving resources and historic value adaptive reuse is a good solution to some of the modern problems of the built environment. CHANGE IN FUNCTION USE NEW MATERIALS Heritage preservation and adaptive reuse of historic warehouse provides new offices and showrooms, with central café in large atrium
10
Reconstruction Reconstruction is the creation of a historically accurate copy of either a specific historic property that no longer exists or an example of one from a chosen historical period. The reconstruction may use traditional techniques and materials, but the materials will be new, and therefore different from the actual materials that would be found in an original structure.
11
Heritage : something that is handed down from the past, as a tradition:
Man Made Heritage: Archaeological (Sub structure) Architectural ( Super structure) Movables ( Painting, sculpture etc.) Heritage: Tangible Heritage Historic Precincts of Cities: Culturally significant buildings and towns Artefacts Intangible Heritage Extant culture of traditional buildings, skills and knowledge Rites and Ritual Social life and Life style of the inhabitants
