4 Steps to Applying to College
Application (online) Application Fee (online) Transcript – Order through Ms. Scholl in the counseling center Test Scores – order through the ACT or SAT agency.

Some colleges also require
1. Counselor/Teacher Recs – common app one counselor, 2 teacher. 2. Personal statement or essay – common app also requires supplemental questions to show FIT In state, no essay except Westminster and U of U honors college

What Colleges consider when reading a student’s application:
Grades and rigor of curriculum Test Scores High School activities/clubs Community service Personal statement –essay (if required) Letters of Rec (if required)

Step 2: Deciding where to apply
Explore colleges – Family Connection Campus visits tips on JM website College Fair October 1st Juan Diego, college rep visits Meet with Ms. Koles/Ms. Sawaya: finalize list (reaches/possibles/likelies and financial safeties) Please go to and show “Schedule of College Representatives” and scroll down it slowly for audience to look at. If the list is still going by the time I finish talking about this slide, just end it to go on to the next slide. Thanks.

Step 3: Order transcripts/test scores.
Must be “Official" $5 each Order from Ms. Scholl Check status on Family Connection “Flow” of a transcript JM Profile - use (decile rank – we report both!) Order test scores sent We do not send scores

Communicate with your student (list, financial aid) Expect “the balancing act” Do NOT apply/write essays/contact colleges for your student Search for scholarships

Integrity, maturity, motivation, and resilience Community engagement, citizenship and leadership Clubs, organizations, athletics or other activities Familial responsibilities Extraordinary circumstances Ability to contribute to and benefit from a culturally intellectually diverse learning community Academic Preparation and Performance: Rigorous course selection throughout high school career (i.e. Honors, AP and IB courses) Grade trend GPA (unweighted) ACT and/or SAT scores Academic achievements and awards or distinctions Intellectual pursuits and creative endeavors Completion of core high school requirements

Scholarships & Financial aid
Scholarship Types: Automatic consideration by applying for admissions Merit-Based & Diversity Deadline: December 1 Need-Based Deadline: February 1 Departmental and Athletics Deadlines vary Financial Aid: File FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by February 1 Grants Loans Work-Study Automatic consideration through admissions application. Be sure to include as much information as possible in the admission application, so fully considered for all of these scholarships.

Log on and update application list Fill out Parent brag sheet under ABOUT ME Student fills out student brag sheet and teacher rec forms Ms. Koles/Ms. Sawaya when completed. Family Connection “LINKS” all documents to Colleges

Step 1: Figuring out test schedule
Take Standardized tests (ACT, SAT, Subject) If applying early, be finished by November 1 (or check websites for deadlines) Subject tests and how many, (Eng, Math, Hist, Science, FL). If student needs stronger application WAIT to apply after 1st semester grades! School code = Show first and then when I start talking about “Reporting scores” please switch to

Show FIT and STAND OUT Does it convey who you are? Stick to 650 word count!! Writing first draft in English class now

Encourage student to “own the process” Check on deadlines/requirements for applying, financial aid, scholarships Visit schools, either virtually or in person Check to see if PROFILE is required Research the WUE schools (Western Undergraduate Exchange

Important Dates Early Action November 1st or 15th - UC schools November 30th - Honors college priority deadline Nov. 1st Merit Scholarship deadlines usually December 1st! FAFSA application available after October. 1st Do not have to declare the college of choice until May 1st!
