It is small, fun, versatile and has been made for the inventors of the future: The KUKA youBot is a powerful, educational robot that has been especially designed for research and education in mobile manipulation, which counts as a key technology for professional service robotics. Unit 10 New robots 42 Part4 YouBot The KUKA youBot consists of two main parts, including an omnidirectional platform, a five degree-of-freedom robot arm with a two-finger gripper. The KUKA youBot omni-directional mobile platform consists of the robot chassis, four mecanum wheels, motors, power and onboard PCC board, as shown in Figure Users can either run programs on this board, or control it from a remote computer. The platform comes with a Live-USB stick with preinstalled Ubuntu Linux and drivers for the hardware. Figure 10-7 The mobile platform of youBot

The KUKA youBot arm has five degrees of freedoms (DOF) and a two-finger gripper. If connected to the mobile platform, the arm can be controlled by the onboard PC. Alternatively, the arm can ben chontrolled without the mobile platform by using an own PC connected via Ethernet cable. As shown in the picture 10-8. Figure 10-8 The youBot arm

Additional sensors can be mounted on robot. The KUKA youBot comes with fully open interfaces and allows the developers to access the system on nearly all levels of hardware control。 It further comes with an application programming interface (KUKA youBot API), with interfaces and wrappers for recent robotic frameworks such as ROS or ORCOS, with an open source simulation in Gazebo and with some example code that demonstrates how to program the KUKA youBot. The platform and the available software shall enable the user to rapidly develop herself/ himself own mobile manipulation applications.
