Blood… The River of Life
A delivery system of 6 quarts of liquid fun!!!
2
I. Functions of Blood Transports Oxygen to body cells
Transports Carbon Dioxide and Waste from the body cells Transports food to body cells Contains disease fighters Regulates body temperature Transports hormones
3
II. Anatomy of Blood Plasma Liquid Part of Blood (92% Water)
Contains salts, proteins, nutrients, waste, hormones, sugar, enzymes Non living
4
II. Anatomy of Blood B. Red Blood Cells Live 100-120 days No nucleus
Contain Hemoglobin which carries oxygen Flattened Discs Made in bone marow
5
II. Anatomy of Blood White Blood Cells 1. Less than 1% of Blood
2. Complete cells (contain nucleus and organelles) 3. Protective army of cells used in Defense against foreign invaders 4. Can leave the circulatory system and go to damaged tissues
6
Anatomy of Blood The Five Types of White Blood Cells
a. Neutrophils – Fight acute infection b. Eosinophils – Allergies and Parasites
7
(Cont) c. Basophils – Seen in inflammation
d. Lymphocytes – Immune Response – make antibodies, fights tumors e. Monocytes – Fight chronic infections like TB
8
II. Anatomy of Blood Platelets 1. Fragments of Cells
2. Aid in Blood Clotting 3. Form a temporary plug to seal break in skin
9
Blood Types Inherited from parents
Caused by carbohydrate markers on Red Blood Cells called Antigens Each blood type has a different Antigen
10
Blood Types Type A = A antigens Type B = B antigens
Type AB = A and B antigens Type O = no antigens Rh + = + antigens Rh - = no antigens
11
If a cell doesn’t recognize the marker, it will produce proteins called antibodies that fight against it
12
Type A = makes anti-B antibodies
Type B = makes anti- A antibodies Type AB = makes no antibodies Type O = makes Anti A and Anti B antibodies Rh + = no antibodies Rh - = anti RH+ antibodies
13
The Scoop on Blood Types Antigens
ABO Rh A – A antigens B- B antigens AB – A & B antigens O – no antigens Rh+= antigen Rh - = no antigen Carbohydrates MARKERS ON CELL Used in ID
14
The Scoop on Blood Type Antibodies
Rh ABO Bind to Antigens Anti-A Anti-B Anti Rh+ Proteins Find Invaders In plasma
16
Inheritance of Blood Types
Type A = IAIA or IAi Type B = IBIB or Ibi Type AB = IAIB Type O = ii
17
Genetics of Blood Type i i IA IAi IAi IB IBi IBi
Cross Type AB with Type O i i IA IAi IAi IB IBi IBi
18
Cross Type A heterozygous with Type B heterozygous
