While Protestant churches won many followers, millions remained true to Catholicism Helping Catholics to remain loyal was a movement within the Catholic Church to reform itself Known as The Catholic Reformation AKA The Counter Reformation Important leaders in this movement include reformer Ignatius and Pope’s Paul III and Paul IV 2

3 Development of Jesuits
1540, the Pope created a religious order for followers Called the Society of Jesus Members called Jesuits Jesuits focused on 3 Activities 1) Founded schools throughout Europe 2) Convert non-Christians to Catholicism 3) Stop the spread of Protestantism 3

4 Reforming Popes Paul III took steps in reforming Church
1) Directed cardinals to investigate indulgence selling's and other abuses 2) Approved Jesuit order 3) Used Inquisition to seek out heresy 4) Called Council of Church leaders to meet Council of Trent- Cardinals and Bishops agree on several doctrines Church interpretation of Bible was final Christians need faith & good work for salvation Bible and Church tradition were equally powerful authorities for guiding Christian life Indulgences were valid expressions of faith Fall selling of indulgences were banned 4
