Have your science book open to page 74 so I may check your reading homework
Thursday 2/23/17 Notebook Entry: A system is something with parts that work together. The atmosphere is a system. What do you thinks its parts are that work together?

BIG Question: How does the sun’s energy affect Earth’s atmosphere?
The Atmosphere BIG Question: How does the sun’s energy affect Earth’s atmosphere?
3
How long will the candle burn? (big jar vs. little jar)
Prediction: What is your prediction? Why do you think that? Observation 3. What do you think might happen if I put a bigger candle under the jar? Container Size Time (sec) Jar Large (437 ml) Jar Small (237 ml)
5
Nitrogen (N2) Importance: adds mass to the atmosphere creating air pressure nitrogen is usually volatile when in liquid or solid form – will turn to a gas easily it is unreactive with materials that make up the solid earth it is very stable in the presence of solar radiation.
7
Oxygen (O2) Importance: needed by plants and animals, necessary for fire to burn What if there was too much? toxic to animals What if there was too little? earth could not support life
8
Water Vapor (H2O) Importance: important factor in weather, part of water cycle What if there was too much?- Earth would get too hot What if there was too little? – Earth would be too cold
9
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Importance: needed by plants, keeps Earth warm enough to live on What if there was too much?- Earth would be too hot What if there was too little? – plants would not survive, earth would be too cold
10
Ozone (O3) Importance: blocks harmful UV light from the sun,
What if there was too much? harms plants and animals What if there was too little? UV light would not be blocked
