3 Examples The taxi fare in Gotham City is $2.40 for the first ½ mile and additional mileage is charged at the rate of $0.2 per 0.1 mile. You plan to give the driver a $2 tip. Write an equation to represent this situation. Label each term with what it represents. How many miles can you ride for $10? Use your equation to solve.

4 Example Anna enjoys dinner at a restaurant in Washington, D.C., where the sales tax on meals is 10%. She leaves a 15% tip on the price of her meal before sales tax is added, and the tax is calculated on the pre-tip amount. She spends a total of $27.50 for dinner. What is the cost of her dinner without tax or tip?

5 Examples For a science project, Sammy observed a chipmunk and a squirrel stashing acorns in holes. The chipmunk hid 3 acorns in each of the holes that it dug. The squirrel hid 4 acorns in each of the holes that it dug. They each hid the same number of acorns, although the squirrel needed 4 fewer holes. How many acorns did the chipmunk hide?

6 Examples You have a coupon worth $18 off the purchase of a scientific calculator. At the same time, the calculator is offered with a discount of 15% off, but no further discounts may be applied. For what tag price on the calculator do you pay the same amount for each discount?
