Opening Assignment A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption. We are using it faster than it can be replenished….
2
Renewable and Non-renewable Energy sources
3
The energy we use in our homes……….where does it come from?
7
NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES
A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.
8
Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy.
NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!
9
Nuclear fission
10
COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.
11
HOW IS COAL MADE ???
12
HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???
13
What’s the problem of using fossil fuels as our main source of energy?
14
HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?
15
RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water
16
SOLAR Energy from the sun.
18
Energy from Earth’s heat.
GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat.
20
WATER or HYDROELECTRIC
Energy from the flow of water.
21
Energy from burning organic or living matter.
BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter.
22
WIND Energy from the wind.
