140 million people with no dental coverage 25 million children Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is a chronic and infectious oral disease of young children 1/3 elementary school children have untreated tooth decay Fun

How widespread is dental decay in children?
This is a nice visual comparing asthma and dental decay rates in children. As you can see, decay is far more common.

Brushing Why should you brush? When should you brush your teeth?
How many times should you brush your teeth? How long should you brush you teeth? How much tooth paste should you use? 2 2 2 rule

Brushing Place a pea-size, or corn kernel sized amount of toothpaste on the brush Brush all surfaces of the teeth What else should be brushed? How often to brush? How long should it take to brush?

Dental decay - key points to remember!
Bacterial Disease Dental decay is the destruction of tooth structure caused by acid Bacteria mixes with sugar/carbohydrate food sources which lead to the acid attack Frequency of consumption of sugar and carbohydrates contribute Self explanatory slide

Here is another nice visual that shows the progression of the decay process. If untreated, tooth decay can advance into the nerve of the tooth causing abscess formation.

What kinds of snacks cause tooth problems?
Sugary snacks and drinks (soda pop) Sticky snacks Snacks that stay on your teeth

To reduce these “acid attacks”…
Choose healthy snacks Have fewer snacks/drinks that are sugary or sticky. Rinse your mouth afterward if you are not able to brush right away.

Encourage fresh fruits and vegetables Limit juice to 1 cup a day Discourage soda What is the best drink for their teeth?
