Battle of the Somme, 1916 The map shows the line of trenches.
One of the most significant events of the war. Casualties were huge and there is on going debate about the poor tactics and leadership of the battle. The Germans had made an attack on Verdun. The idea was to draw the Germans away from there. Outcome: Germans retreated 10km of land and lost 680,000 men. British lost 420,000 men and the French 200,000.
