What is a Biome? Chapter 6.1 Environmental
2
Objectives Describe why vegetation is used to name a biome
Explain how temperature and precipitation determine which plants grow in an area Explain how latitude and altitude affect which plants grow in an area
3
What is a Biome? Biome: large region characterized by a specific type of climate and certain range of plants and animal communities
4
Biomes and Vegetation Biomes are described by vegetation because:
They are the most noticeable characters of that region Plants can determine other organisms that can live there
5
Biomes and Vegetation Plants in a biome have particular adaptations that enable them to survive there Size Shape Colour
6
Biomes and Climate Climate: the weather conditions such as temperature, precipitation, humidity, winds, in an area over a long period of time
7
Biomes and Climate Most organisms adapted to live in a certain range of temperature Determines range of growing season for plants Precipitation: Limits the organisms Need varying degrees of water
8
Biomes and Climate The higher the temperature and precipitation, the taller and denser the vegetation is
9
Latitude and altitude Latitude: distance north or south of the equator
Measured in degrees Altitude: height of an object above sea level Climate varies with latitude and altitude Increase both = climate gets older As get farther from equator get colder, less vegetation
10
Latitude and altitude
11
Describe these biomes
