1 Rail transport statistics developments Agenda Item 4.1
Anna BIAŁAS-MOTYL 23 March 2010 Task Force "Rail transport statistics" Rail transport statistics developments Agenda Item 4.2

2 Development of the scope of the current rail data collection
Proposals for additional data collection on data by distance class data on high-speed trains New data collection using data already collected by the countries for other purposes/institutions using data that used to be collected by the countries The Task Force should thus discuss, confirm, comment and/or complete these proposals. Each proposal should be evaluated from the data quality and comparability points of view 23 March 2010 Task Force "Rail transport statistics" Rail transport statistics developments Agenda Item 4.2

3 Data by distance classes 1/2
New data collection could be similar to that of the previous Directive 80/1177/EEC on rail transport New dedicated dataset(s) on transport of goods by distance classes should be created Two datasets should be created (for detailed and simplified reporting) The production of data by type of goods and distance classes is not possible with the existing datasets the regional routes breakdown of freight transport is provided each 5 years data are available at an aggregated NUTS 2 level preventing the calculation of such detailed statistics by distance classes 23 March 2010 Task Force "Rail transport statistics" Rail transport statistics developments Agenda Item 4.2

4 Data by distance classes 2/2
1. Proposal of a dataset for the undertakings under detailed reporting (Table A10 in Annex A): 2. Proposal of a dataset for the undertakings under simplified reporting (Table B3 in Annex B): 23 March 2010 Task Force "Rail transport statistics" Rail transport statistics developments Agenda Item 4.2

5 Data on high-speed trains 1/3
Aim: to produce detailed statistics on railway transport at city routes level ->could allow a comparison with already existing data on air transport available at a comparable detailed level The Members of the Task Force should evaluate the possibility to question railway enterprises directly (most tickets on high-speed trains are treated on electronic media) Definition on high-speed trains Decision No 1692/96/EC (supported by) 4th edition of the Glossary for Transport statistics 23 March 2010 Task Force "Rail transport statistics" Rail transport statistics developments Agenda Item 4.2

6 Data on high-speed trains 2/3
Data on transport performance of high-speed trains Statistics related to national companies only: territoriality principle would not be applied ->only the country to which the company belongs will be in charge of collecting the data. 23 March 2010 Task Force "Rail transport statistics" Rail transport statistics developments Agenda Item 4.2

7 Data on high-speed trains 3/3
Statistics related to national companies only: territoriality principle would not be applied ->only the country to which the company belongs will be in charge of collecting the data. 23 March 2010 Task Force "Rail transport statistics" Rail transport statistics developments Agenda Item 4.2

8 Mandate of the Task Force
Data by distance classes evaluate the possibility to collect information on national traffic by distance class and type of goods determine existing source(s) allowing to fill in such datasets discuss improvements that can be brought to the proposal Data on high-speed trains evaluate the possibility to provide such statistics evaluate the data collection based on the data availability and users' needs take into consideration the possible evolution of rail passenger transport market in the near future 23 March 2010 Task Force "Rail transport statistics" Rail transport statistics developments Agenda Item 4.2

9 Railway transport vs. emissions
Environmental policies, especially reduction of the GHG emissions Transport particularly concerned How emissions from railway transport could be measured? Which variables would be necessary? Number of trains + number and type of locomotives used (diesel, electric) Journey (empty, loaded, passenger train) Distance travelled 23 March 2010 Task Force "Rail transport statistics" Rail transport statistics developments Agenda Item 4.2

10 Thank you for your attention !
