1 Aim: How were Korea and Vietnam impacted by Chinese culture?
Do now: Write down what you already know about Korea and Vietnam.

2 Korea Korea was founded in 2333 BCE.
It was founded by a man named Dan-gun. There have been six dynasties which have ruled Korea. It did not split into two until after World War II. It also did not become an independent nation until 1945.

3 Silla Dynasty The Silla dynasty was one of the longest sustained dynasties ever. It was established in 58 BCE and fell in 935 CE. After almost 1000 years of rule, they split into three kingdoms.

4 Early Silla The first rulers were known as chachaungs meaning priests.
The dominant clans during this period were the Pak , Sok and Kim. The founder was a man named Hyeokgeose.

5 Mid-Silla Their leader Nulchi, established a father-to-son inheritance of the crown, replacing the previous rotation system between the clans. They were constantly battling the neighboring kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje and Gaya over territorial disputes as each of them wanted to occupy more of the Korean peninsula.

6 Silla’s Relationship with China
From the 6th century CE Silla rulers adopted the Chinese title wang or king– which replaced the title of previous Silla kings. They also picked up the Chinese writing system, Confucianism during the Han period, and Buddhism, which became the official state religion in 535 CE. When Taoism became more popular during the Tang period in China so too it became more widespread in the Silla kingdom.

7 Chinese, Japanese and Korean writing compared

8 Fall of the Silla The final century and a half of the Silla state was one of nearly constant chaos and civil war as the king was reduced to little more than a figurehead and powerful and wealthy families rose to actual dominance outside the capital and royal court.

9 First Chinese Interference with Vietnam
In 111 BC, Han troops invaded Vietnam and established new territories. While governors and top officials were Chinese, the original Vietnamese nobles still managed in some of the highlands.

11 Trung Sisters The Trung sisters were Vietnamese military leaders who ruled for three years after rebelling in 40 AD against the first Chinese takeover of Vietnam. Their names were Trung Trac and Trung Nhi. In 40 AD, they led a successful revolt against Han Governor Su Dung and recaptured 65 states. Trung Trac became the Queen. In 43 AD, Emperor Guangwu of the Han sent his famous general Ma Yuan with a large army to put an end to the revolt. After a long, difficult campaign, Ma Yuan suppressed the uprising and the Trung Sisters committed suicide to avoid capture. They are regarded as national heroines of Vietnam.

12 Vietnamese Relation to China
It turns that because of Chinese influence in Vietnam that the Vietnamese are more genetically similar to the Chinese than to other Southeast Asian countries. Vietnamese and Chinese New Year’s are the same. Both their flags and national emblems are extremely similar. Though there are so many similarities, many Vietnamese strongly dislike the Chinese to this day.
