3 Who We Are

4 Where’s the Broadband?! Why? – pt1 an introduction
The High Plains Library District was established in 1986 as the Weld Library District. The District serves over 217,000 residents of Weld County and parts of neighboring counties The District covers a geographic area of almost 4,000 square miles – about 2x the size of Delaware Service area includes urban, suburban and rural; poverty rates are high and there is an immigrant population lacking resources We purposed the pilot to gauge interest and determine feasibility of a new service of checking out laptops with internet access to the public. In response to the fact that: We had public requests There are times when in house computers have 43 people waiting for computers and we are turning people away There is an increased usage of library services This program may generate higher use or more patrons (how to monitor)

5 Laptop Internet Coverage
Why? – pt2 specifics Laptops are set with Verizon 3G network cards because of the large coverage (in blue) Landline broadband service provides significantly less coverage

6 Measures – how do we know if this is successful
Measures – how do we know if this is successful? They started out fuzzy but we worked to refine them. Our measure of success was based on the following: Cost used for calculation is $1500 (800 for device, 500 for annual connectivity, plus 200 staging and mgmnt fees). Targeted life is 2 years per unit. Pilot terms of success are defined as: Done - Number of requests totaling 20 circs per unit during the 6 month checkout pilot Done - HPLD receives unsolicited positive publicity from the pilot Done -Patron surveys indicate in excess of 85% of the respondents state the service is of value NEED HELP?? Per circ - Goal for cost for user equate to approx $25/circ (based on total of 40 circ per year –per # of potential public to benefit –ultimately cost per circ is less than initial purchase cost -online schedule to reserve…still working -etc notes Elena to cover
