English II Common Unit LIKE THE SUN
2
Think-Pair-Share Think of a situation, in which telling the truth would have painful consequences. Share with your neighbor or in your table group. Listen to the other student(s) and offer advice or possible solution without compromising the desire to be truthful. You can have students write down their situation as a quickwrite before sharing instead of thinking.
3
In this UNIT you will … Review the definition and purpose of the following literary elements: point of view, characterization, and theme. Read and annotate a short work of fiction (as well as a short poem). Recognize how the character develops over the course of the story. Formulate and defend an opinion on an issue using specific textual and other relevant evidence. Initiate and participate in a collaborative discussion. Poem “Tell All the Truth” is optional
4
Read and Annotate (story)
Read “Like the Sun” and make at least 3 good annotations per page. Respond to the questions marked with an * as you read. What makes good annotations? Feel free to add a slide reviewing what makes good annotations

Point of View & Theme What point of view does Narayan use?
What does Sekhar learn by the end of the story? How is Narayan’s choice of POV helpful in understanding Sekhar’s character development?
6
Read and Annotate (poem)
