Function: Provides that it is unlawful for any person to import, export, transport, sell, receive, acquire, or purchase fish, plant, or wildlife taken, possessed, transported, or sold in violation of any regulation of the United States Violations can result in civil penalties up to $10,000 per violation or maximum criminal sanctions of $20,000 in fines and/or up to five years in prison Underscores other federal, state, and foreign laws protecting wildlife by making it a separate offense to trade wildlife taken in violation of those laws Environmental issues affected: wildlife preservation, conservation, exotic species, illegal hunting of wildlife Regulation and Enforcement: The Lacey Act is administered by the Departments of the Interior, Commerce, and Agriculture through their respective agencies (including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, etc.)
