3 Why was there revolution and war at the same time?
Russian peasants and workers were already on the verge of starvation when the war began Czar Nicholas II had done very little to address the needs of his people

4 In March of 1917, workers revolted in St. Petersburg
When did the revolution begin in Russia? In March of 1917, workers revolted in St. Petersburg Soldiers were ordered to stop the rebellion, they refused and joined with the workers Together, they would create a new government and force the czar to give up the throne

5 Was the revolution a success?
The rebellion did little to solve the problems facing Russia Slowly, Russia was moving toward civil war One group that rose to power was the Bolsheviks Bolsheviks believed in socialism, the idea that every should “share the wealth”

6 Who led the Bolsheviks? Vladimir Lenin
Outspoken leader of the Bolsheviks Rallied people with slogans such as “ Peace, Land, and Bread” Took control of the government in November of 1917

7 What actions did Lenin take as leader?
Pulled Russia out of the war Signed a peace treaty with Germany Tightened his control of Russia Continued fighting a civil war By 1921, the Bolsheviks had successfully taken over Russia, they called their new country the Soviet Union

8 How did the US respond when the war began?
At first, the US practiced a policy of neutrality President Wilson was even re-elected on the slogan “ He Kept Us Out of War” But a series of events would slowly push the US into the war

9 What happened early on? Feb Germany U-boats (submarines) begin unrestricted submarine warfare May 1915 – Germany u-boat sinks a British ship named the Lusitania… 1200 people die, including 128 Americans

10 What happened later on? Jan – Zimmerman Note, Germany asks Mexico to join with them and promises to return lands taken from them by the US Feb. – Mar 1917 – Germany continues its use of unrestricted submarine warfare

11 How did the US end up in the war?
April 1917 – President Wilson asks Congress for a declaration of war Within months, American troops arrive in Europe
