Polymorphic alleles and population bias in Y-STR loci. (A) Mass spectrometry identification of four discrete alleles from DYS635 that all have the same length. Each of the alleles above is typed as simply a ‘23’ by CE methodology. However, in reality there are four different alleles that are identified as different by mass spectrometry. (B) Frequency of observation of SNPs in Y-STR alleles by population group. No polymorphisms were observed in DYS19, DYS389I, DYS391 or DYS456.
