THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Mouth Mouth – Food is mechanically broken down by the tongue and teeth. Saliva provides water and enzymes to chemically break down the food. Animal Teeth are different depending on diet – See Skulls Esophagus Stomach Small intestine Large intestine Anus 5

6 Esophagus – Food passes through the tube to enter the stomach.

7 Stomach - Muscle contracts to churn the food and digestive enzymes and strong acids digest the food

8 Question: If there is acid in your stomach, how come it doesn’t eat through you stomach?

9 Small intestine (long and skinny). Most digestion occurs here. Nutrients diffuse through the wall of the intestine and enter the bloodstream.

The lining absorbs water from the undigested food. Undigested food is packed into a solid

14 Diseases of the Digestive System
Food Sensitivities – irritation of digestive tract by un digestible food (ex. Lactose). Symptoms are nausea, headaches, diarrhea, etc.

Food Allergies – The body’s immune system reacts when a certain food is eaten. Causes hives, rash, swelling and anaphylactic shock (ex. Peanuts).

16 Diseases of the Digestive System
Food Poisoning – Eating food or water that is contaminated with bacteria or chemicals they make. Often caused by poor handling and storage (salmonella, botulism). Causes vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea and fever.
