1 2014 Curriculum The aims of the maths curriculum are: Mastery:
Fluency Reasoning Problem solving Mastery: This is a curriculum that broadens and deepens pupils’ knowledge rather than accelerates into the curriculum of a different year group.

2 Fluency It is not about rote learning facts.
It is having an understanding of why they are doing what they are doing. It is also about choosing appropriate methods for what you are doing. Using manipulatives early on will really help with this.

3 Reasoning You can encourage your child to reason by asking them to make a conjecture. Is this always, sometimes or never true? How do you know? e.g. when you add two odd numbers together you always get an even number. You can encourage your child to generalise by asking them to notice a pattern or relationship and see if they can continue this. e.g. 20+5=25 19+6=25 18+7=25

4 Problem Solving Everyday life provides opportunities for this.
helping with shopping lists (how many do I need? How much will it cost?) planning parties (similar to before but also times to arrive/be collected, cost of the party) family days out (where/how far away/when should we leave/total cost – do children go free?)

5 Our Calculation Policy
Updated in January 2016 Includes: Place value Addition and subtraction / multiplication and division Fractions Shows the progression of methods through different ‘stages’. Where possible, similar inverse methods are shown alongside each other.
