3 Beatitudes Everyone knows the Beatitudes. They serve as the opening for the greatest sermon ever preached. All who are citizens of God’s kingdom needs to understand them.

4 Beatitudes Each Beatitude follows a specific form: A declaration of blessing. A description of attitude. A disposition of blessing.

5 Beatitudes “Blessed” Comes from Greek word: MAKARIOS - μακάριος Used 50 times in KJV Means - happy

6 Beatitudes Why called beatitudes? They are attitudes which describes the citizens of the Kingdom of God. They are attitudes for how citizens of the Kingdom of God are to be.

What does it mean to be “poor in spirit?”

8 “Poor in Spirit” Meaning of poor. Connotation of a beggar. Indicates without riches. Indicates helplessness.

9 “Poor in Spirit” A beggar in relation to the spiritual. Without spiritual riches. Spiritually helpless.

What does it mean to be “poor in spirit?” What is the relationship of the Poor in spirit to the Kingdom of Heaven?

12 Relationship Kingdom of Heaven Christ is King Christ preached it (Matthew 4:23) Has specific characteristics given (Matthew 5, 6, 7) Is the church (Matthew 16:18-19)

13 Relationship Some versions read: “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Greek indicates: “for the kingdom of heaven is of them.”

14 Relationship We must ask what type of relationship is it? Is it one of ownership? Is it one of composition?
