A Novel Approach To High Yield Musculoskeletal Topics For Emergency Medicine Trainees CLICK TO GO BACK TO KIOSK MENU Nicholas Governatori, MD, Shruti Chandra, MD, Nicole Piela, MD, Julie Goldrich, MD Thomas Jefferson University Hospital - Philadelphia, PA Background Results Station 2: Tap That! Station 1: Splint This? Developing a curriculum for musculoskeletal topics can be challenging, as it often involves both didactic components and procedural skills. We created a comprehensive skills workshop with 4 stations in order to highlight some of the most commonly seen complaints in the Emergency Department: splinting, knee arthrocentesis, shoulder anatomy, and nerve blocks. Pre-Test (n=25) Post-Test (n=23) Mean 59.4 78.9* Median 60 80 Standard Deviation 14.7 11.6 High Score 85 90 Low Score 30 45 Perform arthrocentesis Analyze fluid Interpret X-ray Place splint Best team wins! *Unpaired Student T-Test, probability <0.001 [T=5.09, sdev=13.3, deg of freedom=46] Station 3: SHOulder OFF Station 4: Nerve BLOCKED Conclusion Objectives Identify upper extremity fractures on X-ray and apply appropriate splinting materials. Perform knee athrocentesis followed by synovial fluid analysis. Perform a focused shoulder exam and practice common methods of shoulder reduction. Review principles of lower extremity nerve blocks. Musculoskeletal topics are an essential part of residency education. Using interactive skills stations appeals to all different types of learners and can be used to increase both the procedural competency and medical knowledge of emergency medicine trainees.
