1 Geometry The topic in Part 3 Modules 6 through 9 is geometry.
Part 3 Module 6: units of measure Part 3 Module 7: real-world problems involving distance Part 3 Module 8: real-world problems involving area Part 3 Module 9: real-world problems involving volume We will cover Part 3 Modules 6, 7 and 8 as a single unit, intermingling a variety of examples over the next couple of lectures; we will cover Part 3 Module 9 after Test 3.

2 A true story (This is a typical exercise from Part 3 Module 8.)
An American football field measures 120 yards long (including the end zones) by 160 feet wide. After the BCS championship game on January 7, 2010, a memorabilia company purchased the turf covering the field on which the game was played. Their plan was to remove the turf, cutting it into three-inch by three-inch squares, each of which would be freeze-dried, wrapped in plastic, and sold to collectors at price of $100 each. Assuming that no turf would be wasted, and that all squares would be sold, roughly how much money would the company earn? A. $92 million B. $3.3 billion C. $7.7 million D. $23 million

3 Exercise #2 The GEOMETRIZER www.math.fsu.edu/~wooland/GeoA/Geo15.html
The figure below shows an aerial view of The Hurl-O-Matic, a carnival ride in which the passengers are seated in a car, attached to the end of an arm which rotates rapidly around a central hub. Suppose that the length ( r ) of the arm is 39 feet, and that, at full speed, it takes 4 seconds for the car to complete one revolution. Find the speed of the car. A. 819 miles per hour B. 54 miles per hour C. 90 miles per hour D. 21 miles per hour E. 42 miles per hour

4 Exercise #3 (This is a typical exercise from Part 3 Module 7) The GEOMETRIZER Homer and Aristotle are loitering on a street corner when Plato, to whom they owe money, suddenly approaches. Homer begins running northward at 12 miles per hour, and Aristotle begins running eastward at 15 miles per hour. How far apart are Homer and Aristotle after 10 minutes? A. 1.6 miles B. 4.5 miles C. 3.2 miles D miles

5 Exercise #4 Gomer is a traveling salesperson who needs to drive from Podunck to Boonies (see map below). However, Gomer is too cheap to take the Boonies Expressway (which is a toll road), so instead he takes the Podunck Parkway to Sticks and then takes Sticks Highway to Boonies. The direct distance from Podunck to Boonies is 39 miles, and the distance from Sticks to Boonies is 31 miles. How much gas will Gomer use, assuming his Yugo gets 6 miles per gallon? A. 9.1 gallons B gallons C gallons D gallons

6 Exercise #5 A rectangular floor measuring 18 feet by 13 feet will be covered with isosceles right triangular tiles with legs measuring 4 inches. Approximately how many tiles are needed to cover the floor? A. 5265 B. 2106 C. 4212 D. 15

7 Exercise #6 The figure below (which is not drawn to scale) shows an exterior wall of a house. The wall contains two windows, each of which measures 60 inches by 48 inches. The wall, but not the windows, will be covered with siding material at a cost of $2.75 per square foot. Find the total cost. A. $328 B. $15048 C. $16632 D. $682 8ft 36 ft

8 Exercise #7 Find the area contained within the race track shown below.
A. 97,489 square yards B. 296,378 square yards C. 135,412 square yards D. 45,137 square yards E square yards
