2 What is the Inquisition?
A court established by the church to fight Protestantism It was used to impose religious uniformity.

3 What Happened? The church put heretics on trial for their religious beliefs and killed many of them Those who were condemned of heresy (belief or religion contrary to orthodox religious doctrine) were handed over to the state for punishment Tried people who were accused of being Protestants, of practicing witchcraft, or of breaking church law

Popes who increased the Inquisition's power Spanish Monarchs who set up and controlled the harsher Spanish Inquisition Jews, Muslims, Protestants: Used Inquisition to impose religious uniformity on them Church: did not want people to read books on Index of Forbidden Books

6 Religious Disunity in Europe
Inquisitions actions are seen as abuse of church's power People were not allowed to follow their own beliefs People had to follow the given religion by the church (Catholic Christian) or they would be told that they would lose their soul
