Narrative vs. Dramatic Text
The nitty gritty of writing a play.
2
Convert – Narrative to Dramatic Text
Requirements: You must have all of the following in your script Stage Directions/Director’s Notes: that describe the scene, tell the actor’s how they will deliver their lines, and stage directions to move about or off stage. Each character mentioned in the Narrative text must have at least three sets of lines of dialogue. You may add characters that propel your plot but don’t change the focus or storyline of the play. Your dramatic text may not exceed three pages in length. Must retell the fable as close to the narrative as possible. You may add dialogue that is not present in the narrative text, but it cannot change the meaning of the original story or plot.

Example: Act 1 Scene 1 “Little Red Riding Hood”
Stage Directions (Little Red Riding Hood, LRRH, is quietly singing to herself as she skips down the path, DSR (Down Stage Right), of a cheery looking forest. Wolf is USL (Up Stage Left) listening to his iPod and jogging towards LRRH) LRRH – (skipping up the trail singing to herself) “Oh what a beautiful morning. Oh what a beautiful day…” Huh, that’s a strange sight. I think I see a wolf jogging with an iPod. And he seems to be jogging in my direction. Oh what ever will I do? Wolf – (jogging towards LRRH) “I’ve got the eye of the tiger… roar, roar, ROAR! I’ve got the eye of the Tiger…” Oh, hello. I almost ran into you. Sorry.
