2 Journal Entry : October 20, 2014
Reflection: Now that the first nine weeks have passed, what are your thoughts about the level of difficulty for this class? What are some activities/assignments that you would like to do more of this nine weeks? How do you feel about your performance in my class so far?

3 Daily Classwork Journal Entry / Discussion
Read/Discuss “The Rhetoric of Revolution” (Pg. 104 & 105) for the review of terms used in speeches. Take notes over the passage in your journal. (10 minutes or so) Read/Discuss “The Crisis No. 1” by Thomas Paine (Pg ) and answer questions 1-5 and question #7 on page 127. (Due at the end of the hour.) Objectives: Understand rhetorical devices for the purpose of historical documentation. Analyze persuasion.

4 Aristotle’s Appeals Ethos (credibility) – ethical appeal. The author must convince the reader that the argumentation is valid by way of respect/credibility. Pathos (Emotional) –This is the connection to the reader’s emotion through diction and argumentation. Logos (Logical) – The art of persuasion through reason. This focuses on the clarity of the claim, the logic of its reasoning, and the effective use of evidence.

5 Methods of Delivery Objectivity – The objective delivery will use multiple sources to gather facts/information in regards to the subject. There is typically no bias. Example – 99% of households in America have at least one television. Subjectivity – Reporting information in the form of personal opinion. A subjective article/speech will have a heavy bias. Example – Even if families lack food to eat at night, they still have the all important television.

In yesterday’s section The Rhetoric of Revolution, the author states that the United States should thank effective writers for persuading Americans to seek independence. Using the following sentence stem, describe what rhetorical devices and methods of persuasion (appeals) that Thomas Paine effectively used. Thomas Paine was the voice of the American Revolution because ____________________.

7 Deductive Reasoning (Aristotle)
Deductive Argument: Major Premise – All men are mortal. Minor Premise – Mr. Stanberry is a man. Conclusion – Mr. Stanberry is mortal. Law of Syllogism: If Dave is sick, then he will be absent. If Dave is absent, then he will miss his classwork. Therefore, if Dave is sick, then he will miss his classwork. A=B B=C A=C (Also known as the Transitive Property in Mathematics…)
