1 Chemistry Notes Unit 7: Intro to Pressure

2 (1) What is Pressure? The force exerted in a given area.
Force for every unit of area.

3 (2) What are the units for Pressure?
“psi” = lbs / in2 Lbs = pounds (force) in2 = inches squared (area) “pascal” or “atm” = N / m2 N = newtons (force) m2 = meters squared (area)

4 (3) Pressure Units Example #1
Using the following relationships… 1 atm = 760 mm Hg 1 atm = 14.4 psi 1 atm = kPa (kilopascal) ______________________________ Convert use factor labeling to convert 320 mmHg to atm.

5 (4) Pressure Units Example #2
Using the following relationships… 1 atm = 760 mm Hg 1 atm = 14.4 psi 1 atm = kPa (kilopascal) ______________________________ Use factor labeling to convert 30.0 psi to mmHg.

6 (5) Factors Effecting Pressure
Volume (V) Number of Particles (n) Temperature (T)

7 (6) Pressure Relationships
Linear Relationship: Both increase, OR, Both decrease As the “factor” increases…. So does pressure Equation  division (fraction) Inverse Relationship: One increases, One decreases Pressure decreases Equation  multiplication
