LECTURE 2.1 – IONIC BONDING
2
Today’s Learning Target
LT 2.3 – I can hypothesize the compound that forms between two ions. Furthermore, I can discuss the role that electronegativity and ionization energy played in the formation of this ionic bond. LT 2.4 – I can explain how electrostatic attractions lead to the formation of visible salt crystals. In this explanation, I can incorporate the idea of electrostatic attraction, positive charge, and negative charge.
3
How are bonds formed?
4
I. Electrons and Bond Formation
Bonds form due to the movement of electrons Electrons can be either shared or transferred between elements Exchange occurs so elements can gain a full Octet.
5
How do ionic bonds form?
6
Chemical Bonding Ionic Bonds Metallic Bonds CovalentBonds
7
I. Ionic Bonds Ionic Bond – A bond that forms between ions as a result of the elements exchanging electrons. Formed between metals and non-metals Bond forms due to cation – anion attraction that results from transferring electrons
8
Ionic Bond Formation
9
II. Ionization Energy, Electronegativity and Ionic Bond Formation
Ionic bonds form because an atom with a low ionization energy loses its electron an element with a high IE.

II. Monoatomic Ionic Bonds
An ionic bond that forms between 2 elements is known as a monoatomic ionic bond. When elements bond, they form a compound that has new properties. New compounds do not have a charge.
14
Class Example What is the compound that forms between calcium and fluorine?
15
Table Talk What is the compound that is formed between magnesium and phosphorus?
16
Stop and Jot What is the compound that is formed between sodium and nitrogen?
17
How do polyatomic bonds form?
18
Stuck Together
19
I. Polyatomic Ionic Bonds
Sometimes, there are charged compounds of two non-metals. Known as polyatomic ions These ions can form ionic bonds with other elements
20
Class Example What is the compound that would form between aluminum and SiO32-
21
Table Talk Determine the ionic compound that forms between barium and OH-
22
Stop and Jot Determine the ionic compound formed between cesium and CO32-.
