2 Beck Cognitive Therapy
Aaron T. Beck ( ) cognitive therapy that focus on illogical thought processes. Beck has therapist- through using persuasion and logic to change existing beliefs. The therapist’s goal is to demonstrate to a client that their automatic thinking may be incorrect and that things are not as bad they seem.

3 Maladaptive Thought Patterns
Overgeneralization- making blanket judgments about oneself. Polarized Thinking- categorizing information in two categories. Selective Attention- focusing on only one detail of many.

4 Examples… Most people don’t like me. I’m a failure.
People always criticize me.

5 Beck Cognitive Therapy
The goal of Beck’s cognitive therapy is to change the way people think. He believed that depressed people blame themselves instead of their circumstances. Beck also believed that depressed people focus on only negative events and ignore the positive events.

6 Questions? When a person says “If I wear this dress, people will think I’m fat.” what is this called? What exactly did Beck focus on in his theory? How would a therapist respond to a person who believes they never have a good time? Why does Beck want to change the way people think? Would homeless people feel that receive selective attention? Why?
