1
Make the following chart in your notebook and begin filling it in with examples of solids, liquids and gases. Solid Liquid Gas
2
THE THREE STATES OF MATTER
3
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
4
Properties of Matter How It Looks (Shiny ,Dull, Color, etc.)
How It Feels (Hard, Soft, Rough , Smooth, etc.) How It Smells (Sweet, Sharp, Terrible, No Smell, etc.) How It Sounds (Loud, Soft, Echo, No Sound, etc.) What It Does (Bounce, Stretch, Tear, Break, Magnetism etc.)
5
SOLIDS
6
SOLID Has definite volume and shape.
7
Liquids
8
LIQUID Has a definite volume, but not a definite shape.
Takes on the shape, but not entire space of container.
9
GAS
10
Gas Has no definite shape or volume.
Takes the shape and fills the entire space of container.
11
Physical changes in matter
A Physical change is a change in how matter looks, but not the kind of matter is it is. No molecules are rearranged in a physical change. Tear Cut Folded Written Liquid Solid Gas Mixture Solution Break
12
PHYSICAL CHANGES
13
States of Matter A change in state of matter (solid, liquid or gas) is a physical change. Solid ice = H2O Liquid water = H2O Gas steam = H2O
14
Chemical changes in matter
New Matter is formed. Atoms are rearranged to form a new substance. Burning Cooking Rusting Iron + water + oxygen = rust 4 Fe + 6H2O + 3O2 4Fe(OH)3
15
CHEMICAL CHANGES
16
Is this a solid, a liquid, or a gas
Is this a solid, a liquid, or a gas? Can you find more than one type of matter in any of the pictures?
17
Is this a physical change or a chemical change
Is this a physical change or a chemical change? Can you find more than one physical or chemical change in the pictures?
