How characters are developed?
Creating characters is the whole point of writing stories. The story is only interesting to us as readers if we can relate to the characters in a story. There are several was that this is done.

3. Direct Characterization
The writer tells us flat out what a character is like, what his or her motives are, etc.
Ex – Tom was skinny and had blue eyes.

4. Indirect Characterization
When the author doesn’t directly tell us what kind of person the character is
The writer shows us, not tells us, what kind of person the character is

5. Indirect Characterization
Screaming as he went out the door, Tom ran to his car and roared the engine to life before squealing the tires out of the driveway.

7. Speech What a character says and how he says it tells us a lot
Speech also reveals the morals and values of a character

8. Thoughts In literature, we get to “hear” the character’s thoughts
Secret feelings, motivations, etc can go a long way to revealing things about characters

9. Effect on Others
Is the character well liked? Does everyone hate him? Why?
Are other jealous?
Is he or she looked down upon?

10. Actions
What a character does in the story probably has the most to do with how we feel about the character
Actions can reveal motivations and reasons for their behavior

13. Major Character Known as the Protagonist
Focus of the reader’s attention

14. Minor Characters Takes part in the story’s events
Attention not focused on them
Often helps the reader learn about the main character

15. Round Characters Have many different character traits
Author gives lots of details about their personality
Major characters are almost always Round

16. Flat Character
Have only one or two personality traits and can be summed up in a few words.
Have no depth, like a piece of cardboard. Often are stereotypes.
Character remains the same at the end of the story as they were at the beginning.
