1 Cell Division and Growth
What is mitosis and how is it useful? Starter Maths Challenge : If I have 1 cell and it doubles every 24 hours, how many days will it take to get to over 500 cells.

2 Key Word Call My Bluff Mitosis

3 Mitosis – the process of cell division.
Mitosis – a small disease causing cell. Mitosis – a microscopic organism that lives in your hair.

4 Success Criteria – I can ….
6a) Outline how mitosis produces two new cells genetically identical to each other and to the parent cell 6b) List examples of where mitosis takes place in plants and animals 6c) Name key cell components involved in cell division 6d) Describe the main processes in the cell cycle

5 Use the information around the room to complete your DNA Fact File .

6 How many cells? An adult human is made up of about 50 billion cells.
That’s cells! Everyone started out as just one single cell. How does one cell become 50 million million?

7 Task 2: On your tables use the A3 paper to
1) write the title “our ideas on how cells divide” 2) describe/draw your ideas on how cells divide.

8 Cell division (mitosis)
What would happen if this cell just spit into 2? 46 chromosomes

9 23 chromosomes 23 chromosomes And again?

10 Task Use your original ideas and what you have just observed, to describe the basic steps of mitosis in your books. SIMPLE ANIMATION TIME

11 Think, Pair , Share why do plants and animals need new cells ?

12 Think, Pair , Share Why do you need new cells?
Skin cells are continually lost. To make new cells the body carries out cell division Cells divide where the body needs to: Grow Replace worn out cells Repair damaged tissue

13 Link to animation

14 Complete the worksheet on mitosis
Use the animation to help you with the following: (use your computer token) Describe how you would teach mitosis to someone else. OR Complete the cartoon strip for mitosis.

15 Plenary Complete the past paper question and write a revision card.
Tick off where you think you are at on your learning outcome list.
