1 The Protestant Reformation Begins

2 Reformation Humor A dog says: "You pet me, you feed me, you shelter me, you love me. You must be God." A cat says: "You pet me, you feed me, you shelter me, you love me. I must be God."

3 Why REFORMation? Catholic Church had a bad reputation by the time of the Reformation Corrupt! Pope Pius II admits to the “pomp of court” (lavish lifestyle, wealth) Kids!!!! Pope Alexander VI admits he has several children! OUCH – A Pope having kids?!!!

4 Catholic Church is corrupt and not doing church work!
Demands for Reform begin throughout Europe (Jan Huss, John Wycliffe - dissenters) Catholic Church is corrupt and not doing church work! New Beliefs that we do not need Church dominating our lives! REMEMBER: Individualism, Humanism, Secularism were the Ideals of the Renaissance! Europe ready for a change! Which led to: New political and economic organizations will form! Growth of Religious Tolerance

5 Conflicts that Challenged the Catholic Church
I. Indulgences= certificates that take away sins…the church sells “forgiveness” to make $ Ask yourself: Who will this anger?

6 Conflicts that Challenged the Catholic Church
M. Merchants want usury lending money and charging interest The Catholic Church forbids usury! Ask yourself: Who would this anger?

7 Conflicts that Challenged the Catholic Church
A. Absolute political power and wealth of the Catholic Church led to Corruption Ask yourself: Why was the Catholic Church so powerful? What people would have preferred to be more powerful than the Church?

8 Conflicts that Challenged the Catholic Church
D. Domination of the Catholic Church by Italian popes Non-Italians (Germans/English nobility) mad that there’s never a non-Italian Pope! (Hint: is there a non-Italian Pope today?)

9 It all begins with a man and a door
Let’s get this Reformation Started!

10 Martin Luther’s Beef He was a Catholic monk
He was ticked at Friar Tetzel! Tetzel was raising money for St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome by selling INDULGENCES …AS IF THEY NEEDED THE MONEY! Bad Friar!!! Luther believed Money for entrance to Heaven was a VERY bad idea!

11 Luther’s Reaction Luther writes up his complaints against the corruption of the Church and it is called… The 95 Theses WOW – he came up with 95 complaints!!! He must have been mad! He nails them to the door of the Catholic Church in his town

12 Luther ignites the Reformation!
Result: the birth of the Protestant Church, which does not recognize the Catholic Church!

13 “What a Monk wants, what a monk gets”
Luther’s Three Main Demands Salvation by faith alone (NOT by paying for an Indulgence!!!) The BIBLE is the ultimate authority! (Not a corrupt Pope or Friar full of hot air!)

14 ALL humans are equal before God
ALL humans are equal before God! (WHOA – meaning, you don’t need a priest to interpret the Bible or have a religious life!)

15 Eventually, this was too much to fit into a reform of the Church…SO, they separated and became…take a wild guess…

16 Lutherans!!!

17 Lutheran “priests” (ministers) could marry!
Oh, and the best part… Lutheran “priests” (ministers) could marry!

18 John Calvin (the Calvinist tradition)
Views: Predestination: God has already decided who will be saved Faith revealed by living a righteous life, work ethic Actions: theological break w/the Roman Catholic Church expansion of the Protestant Movement (Northern Europe, Scotland)

19 The Protestant Reformation in England
Women! Bring me the childbearing women!!! I need a son! Pssst, Sire? Shouldn’t we make up a religious reason?

20 Reformation for the Wrong Reasons!
You’re out of here Catherine! You never gave me a son! You know the sex of a baby is completely determined by the father…jerk!

21 Views… Henry the VIII of England
He dismisses the authority of the Pope in Rome when the Catholic Church refuses to grant him a divorce from his first wife, Queen Catherine Want to be my new queen? Childbearing women need only apply! I need a son! YE OLDE MATCH.COM says He likes walks on the beach, divorce, beheadings, and public execution of any wife who can’t produce a son for him…come on ladies, you know you want him!

22 Ha, ha! I kicked the Pope out of England and took all his stuff!
Henry’s Solution? Broke with the Roman Catholic Church! 1534 – Act of Supremacy makes the English king the head of the national church of England Took/appropriated (or is that stole?) all the lands and wealth that the Catholic Church had in England Ha, ha! I kicked the Pope out of England and took all his stuff!

23 His daughter, Elizabeth I, has the right reasons!
Dad only cared about women and wealth! Meanwhile, the people are upset! Are we to be Catholic or Protestant? My people need a church!

24 Elizabeth I brings in Principles!
Views established the Anglican Church as the national church of England Is tolerant of religious dissenters (those who disagreed with the break from the Catholic Church) She is NOT tolerant of the Spanish though! Spain and England are enemies during her reign!

25 Solution…war! Philip II of Spain Elizabeth I of England
Your English pirates have been stealing from our ships! So. You are a heretic and must be destroyed! Good luck! I may be a woman, but I have the heart of a king!

26 The Spanish Armada (1588) Philip II of Spain sends his mighty fleet of ships, the Spanish Armada, to destroy the English queen. The English have smaller but faster ships and easily destroy the large overgrown Spanish fleet. Queen Elizabeth is victorious! An age of English expansion and colonialism in the New World will begin!

27 And don’t forget an age of big collars!
The Golden Age Elizabeth I is at the center of a Golden Age for England in exploration, literature (Shakespeare), and culture! England’s power grows! And don’t forget an age of big collars!
