3. Finding the effects pane
In lower left of Premiere, you normally start with the project media bin
Use tabbed interface, actually other panes in that window
Can switch between panes by clicking on tab, or by using the >> icon
Select the Effects pane

4. Video transitions 1
Video transitions are applied on the connection of two clips – you will drag a transition over the end of one clip/beginning of the next
Find a transition - for demonstration, I’ll use Film Dissolve
In the Effects pane, expand Video Transitions->Dissolve, and find Film Dissolve

Drag the Transition over the two clips, making sure it “snaps” over the edges of both
Here, the top picture represents no transition applied
The bottom picture is dragging the transition over, just before drop – notice the blue region over both clips

6. Video transitions 3 First Picture – end of clip A
Second Picture – beginning of clip B
Third Picture – Program view after the Film Dissolve transition has been applied. Note that you are seeing clip A fade out (opacity, not “to black” or “to white”) while clip B fades in (opacity)
This is why there’s the transparent effect

7. Video transitions 4 A
You can fine tune the position of the transition by dragging it left or right – arrow A shows the transition has been mostly assigned to affect the second clip
If you hover the cursor over the edge of the transition in the timeline (shown at arrow B) a special cursor appears (that I couldn’t screenshot) which allows you to drag to extend the duration of the transition B

Right clicking on the transition allows you to open a “Set Transition Duration” dialog, or clear it

9. Video transitions 6
Transitions have a control interface as well – In the top left window, normally the Source pane, switch to the Effect Controls tab while you have a transition selected
In this transition, we see that A will dissolve to B

Arrow A: Hit play icon to preview transition either in demo or Actual Source mode
Arrow B: Check to show actual sources in pane
Arrow C,D: Change “where” – or “starting/ending intensity” of transition
For example, Changing start from 0.0 to 50 means when the playback head reaches the transition start point, clip A will immediately be half faded instead of fading gradually
Note – depending on the intensity of the processing required, Premiere may briefly hang while the effect is calculated C D B

11. Video transitions 7 A
Arrow A shows a expandable window (yours might start expanded) click it to expose a transition trim tool
Arrow B shows the clips with the transition between – here you could drag the transition left or right (to make more of the fade appear on clip a or b) or shorten or extend the duration B

12. Video transitions 8
Sometimes a transition is applied to the beginning or end of a clip alone – for example, might put a Dip to Black at end of a clip to “fade out”. One on beginning to “fade in”
That same transition applied over end of clip A, beginning of clip B, will “fade out/fade in” B

13. Video Effects 1
Similar in nature to transitions, video Effects are applied to clips and then tweaked
Require more bit of info – Effect Keyframes
To start, in the Effects pane, find Video Effects->Image Control, and drag Color Balance over to a clip
Drag this over to a clip – not the little fx icon highlights purple (it HASN’T been set in the second clip you see here)
Now, look up at the Effect controls….

14. Video Effects 2 A
Similar in nature to transitions, video Effects are applied to clips and then tweaked
Require more bit of info – Effect Keyframes
An effect Keyframe controls the settings of the effect. To start, find your new effect - it may need to be expanded with the right pointing arrow (A). It might have sub-groups that need to be expanded (I expanded arrow B near the Red option).
Then adjust sliders (C), but we’re not done… B C

15. Video Effects 3
To apply the effect to the entire clip, move the slider (A) to the left, then hit the Toggle Animation button(B)
This creates a Keyframe (C)
Keyframes can be edited after creation. They contain the setting (value of the effect slider in this case) at that point
Right click the title of the effect to clear it A B C

16. Video Effects 4
If you move the slider (A) to the left, then hit the Add/Remove keyframe, you are adding another keyframe. If the settings you apply on this keyframe are different than the leftmost keyframe setting, the effect will “transition” over the duration of playback between Keyframe 1 and 2
You can use the left/right arrows next to the Add/Remove keyframes (C)to jump between the different keyframes of your effect
You can usually drag the slider (D) at a keyframe to change the intensity of the effect A B C D C

17. Sample – Animated Picture in Picture 1
Setup: I’ve got a clip in video channel 2, which would normally fill the screen, covering channel 1
I want it to start full screen, then “shrink and slide” to cover a small portion of the screen like a PIP display
For this, I won’t even need an effect, just the default controls on each clip – so highlight the clip in V2, and go to Effect controls…

18. Sample – Animated Picture in Picture 2
To start, set keyframes for both Position and Scale at the left of the clip
I have done so in the screenshot – observe the half diamonds near arrow A A

19. Sample – Animated Picture in Picture 3
Next, I moved the playback head to the right, and set keyframes for both the Position and Scale
I changed the numbers for both
Position (numbers change left/right and top/bottom positioning
Scale was decreased

End Result:
