SOAPSToneD Analysis: Things to Look for in Informational Texts

S = Subject Who or what is the text about
Subject should be seen throughout the text. Should have evidence (quotes) throughout the text to back up that what you have selected is indeed the subject

O = Occasion The reason that the text was written
Examples: To inform parents, to entertain children, etc.

A = Audience Individual(s) who the author is speaking to/targeting

P = Purpose The author’s goal or desire that they are hoping to accomplish through this text

S = Speaker The author of the text
Normally a qualified person / expert on the subject speaking/writing about

Tone The overall attitude of the speech that the author gives
Think of adjectives (happy, upbeat, informative, etc)

D = Devices All devices or techniques used throughout the text
Devices include: Rhetorical Devices Persuasive Techniques/Devices Literary Devices

D = Diction The author’s word choice
Can often be strong to emphasize a topic’s importance and value Can effect the tone of a text
