Kingdoms and Classification
10 Things To Know Kingdoms and Classification
2
Thing 1: Levels of Classification
Kingdom—Most inclusive Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species—Least inclusive
3
King Phillip Came Over For Good Spaghetti Kooky Pirates Chewed On Funky Green Squids
4
Thing 2: Binomial Nomenclature
Scientific names have two parts Genus species Tyrannosaurus rex Homo sapiens Chesapecten jeffersonius
5
Chesapecten jeffersonius
Tyrannosaurus rex Homo sapiens
6
Thing 3: Kingdom Monera All are prokaryotes All are single-celled
Eubacteria (bacteria) are the everyday bacteria around us Archaebacteria include prokaryotes that live in extreme environments (salty, acidic, hot, etc.)
7
Thing 4: Kingdom Plantae
Plants All are eukaryotic All are multicellular Most have chloroplasts for photosynthesis Autotrophs = producers
8
Thing 5: Three Groups of Plants
Primitive plants don’t make seeds Moss, ferns Gymnosperms usually make seeds in cones Conifers: Pine, hemlock Angiosperms have flowers and seeds are in fruit
13
Thing 6: Kingdom Animalia
All animals are Eukaryotic Heterotrophs = Consumers Multicellular Motile (move) at some point in their life cycle
14
Thing 7: Kingdom Fungi All fungi are/have Eukaryotic Cell walls
Heterotrophs = Consumers Many are decomposers
15
Thing 8: Examples of Fungi
Mushrooms Mold Yeast Puffballs
16
Thing 9: Kingdom Protista
“Junk drawer” of taxonomy All protists are eukaryotes Not a prokaryote, plant, animal, or fungus? You must be a protist!
17
Thing 10: Variety among Protists
Producers and consumers Unicellular and multicellular Cell walls or not Microscopic (amoebas, etc.) or huge (giant kelp) Motile or not
