Moving from Project to Problem Based Learning
Moving from Project to Problem Based Learning
2
Get Started: Analyze the projects found around the room.
Discussion Questions: -What is the highest level of the Bloom’s taxonomy that this project pushes students to achieve? -What 21st century skills (if any) are students using in the execution and presentation of this project? -What cross curricular elements are found within this project (if any)? Projects should be laid out across the room with the project rubric/description found near it. Teachers will get 15 minutes to analyze at least 3 of the projects around the room. Have an analysis sheet for them to use to analyze.

Three Levels of Project Based Learning
Expected Outcome Control Setting 1st Level: Academic Model Demonstrate understanding of academic content only Teacher-led Primarily a Single Classroom/Curriculum 2nd Level: Mixed Model Create a produce or solve a problem within constraints of academic requirements Teacher-student collaboration Single or multiple classes/curriculum 3rd Level: Open Model Create a produce or solve a problem of students choosing Student-led School and Community Source: World Class Learners by Yong Zhao

2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience
Step 1: Identify a real world problem that needs to be solved. Key factors to keep in mind Is it relevant to interests of students at your particular age level? Is it a real world problem that needs to be solved? Is it a problem that will require understanding objectives you are responsible for teaching? Will it require students to analyze and create, not just regurgitate information?
8
Step 2: Read a background on the problem.
2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience Step 2: Read a background on the problem.
9
Step 3: Break the task down into achievable steps.
2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience Step 3: Break the task down into achievable steps. Learn about Shakespearean literature. Learn about a moment in US history. Write the script/story board for the play Design the set Film the play
10
Step 4: Ask “What do we already know about the problem?”
What information do we already know about the fundamentals of Shakespearean plays and writing? 2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience Step 4: Ask “What do we already know about the problem?”
11
Step 5: Ask “What do we NEED to know about the problem?”
What information do we need to know about the fundamentals of Shakespearean plays and writing? 2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience Step 5: Ask “What do we NEED to know about the problem?” How much light and shade is present, the quality of the soil, the availability of water, the amount of square footage
12
Step 6: Learn the necessary information to solve the problem.
Best when dealing with the content that is directly aligned to your standards. Usually most effective with the first cycle of asking what do we already and need to know. Methods Direct, teacher led instruction. Guided research Free research
13
Step 7: Have the students synthesize and conclude.
2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience Step 7: Have the students synthesize and conclude. Chose a type of Shakespearean play you will want to write and x of the y key fundamentals of Shakespearean writing that you will employ.
14
Step 4: Ask “What do we already know about the problem?”
What information do we already know about your chosen moment in US history? 2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience Step 4: Ask “What do we already know about the problem?”
15
Step 5: Ask “What do we NEED to know about the problem?”
What information do we need to know about your chosen moment in US history? 2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience Step 5: Ask “What do we NEED to know about the problem?” How much light and shade is present, the quality of the soil, the availability of water, the amount of square footage
16
Step 6: Learn the necessary information to solve the problem.
Methods Direct, teacher led instruction. Guided research Free research Best used during the later cycles.
17
Step 7: Have the students synthesize and conclude.
2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience Take the information you learned about that moment in history and write the script for the Shakespearean play. Step 7: Have the students synthesize and conclude.
18
Step 4: Ask “What do we already know about the problem?”
What information do we already know about constructing sets? 2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience Step 4: Ask “What do we already know about the problem?”
19
Step 5: Ask “What do we NEED to know about the problem?”
What information do we need to know about constructing sets? 2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience Step 5: Ask “What do we NEED to know about the problem?” How much light and shade is present, the quality of the soil, the availability of water, the amount of square footage
20
Step 6: Learn the necessary information to solve the problem.
Methods Direct, teacher led instruction. Guided research Free research Best used during the latest cycles.
21
Identify the Problem to Be Solved.
Investigate the physical constraints of the problem and the ways that others have solved similar problems. Imagine and brainstorm multiple ways that you could solve the problem. Plan out the exact design with a drawing and all relevant materials listed. Create the solution. Test your design and analyze with all relevant physical and mathematical analysis. Improve upon your design and list all changes made to the original plan in both the pre-test and post test phases. Communicate your findings in a professional manner.
22
2nd Level Problem Based Learning Experience
Build the set that will be used to film your play. Step 7: Have the students synthesize and conclude.
23
How to use iMovie Beforehand: Make sure you have downloaded all the images you want to use, take screen shots of your slides, and prepared your script.
24
Open iMovie Click on Projects.
Click the + Button and start a movie {NOT A TRAILER!!!} Select a theme that you like. Click Create (upper right hand corner)
25
Importing and Editing Pictures
Click on Videos. Add all the videos or photos you want to add to the movie. To add simply click on them.
26
Click on the pictures below the screen to edit them…
Click these buttons to adjust where the picture stars and ends on the slide. Click on the yellow ends of the picture and drag to make bigger if you want the picture to show longer or short if you want it to be shorter. Click this button to edit how the pictures transition.
27
Adding Your Voice Click on the Microphone to record your voice.
When you are done recording, you can edit by clicking on the blue recording until it is selected. If you mess up, you can delete the entire voice or click “split” where the mess up began and then delete the part you don’t like (sometimes split wont come up with the voice clip is short)
