Hildegard von Bingen is commonly referred to as St. Hildegard, because so many popes, bishops, and even kings consulted her. Her musical plays were performed in a convent she established. She was known as “Sybil of the Rhine” for her compositions and poetry. She wrote papers about medicinal uses of natural objects, plants, and many other things. She refused to write in her early years out of shame due to her gender until having had certain visions.

3 Her first work is “Scivias”, completed in 1151/2 which translates to “Know the Ways of the Lord”. It is an illustrative book which spread her fame throughout Germany. She wrote plainchants and antiphons honoring Saints and Virgin Mary. She describes music as “the means of recapturing the original joy and beauty of paradise.” She wrote her music in accordance to her time, which is plainchant or “a single vocal melodic line.” Although she had not been taught music, she wrote 77 chants and the first musical drama, called The Ritual of the Virtues.

4 Hildegard had multiple forms in which she wrote her music in: Hymns, Antiphons, Sequences (sung during mass), Responsories (solo + group responses).
