1 Title Date To assess my understanding of Area and Circumference of Circles 28/11/2018 Starter Activity Complete the ‘Heard the Word Grid.’ Are there any key words that you have learnt or have a better understanding of now than you did at the start of this unit of work?

2 Radius Diameter Circumference Pi Formula Key Words / symbols
Never heard before? Heard of but not sure what it means? Know what it means and can explain it in context Jot down your ideas here... Radius Diameter Circumference Pi Formula

3 Answers and Working Out
1 Questions Answers and Working Out Fluency Label the: Radius Diameter Circumference Problem Solving I have a circular cake with a radius of 10cm. I have a square cake tin. How wide does the cake tin have to be for the cake to fit inside? Reasoning True or False? “The circle with the biggest diameter will also have the biggest Circumference.” Give a reason for your answer.

2 Questions Answers and Working Out Fluency Problem Solving I have a circular cake, with a diameter of 30cm. I want to put a ribbon around my cake. My ribbon is 80cm long. Is it long enough to go around the cake? How do you know? Reasoning Give a rough estimate for the Circumference of a Circle with a diameter of 5cm. True or False? “The Circumference of this Circle is about 6cm.” Give a reason for your answer.

3 Questions Answers and Working Out Fluency A circle has a diameter of 12cm. Use 𝜋 to calculate the Circumference and Area of the circle. Show all your working out. Circumference = Area = Problem Solving Reasoning True of false? “The Area of a Circle is always bigger than the Circumference.” Give a reason for your answer. I have worked out that the area of this circle is 5 x 5 x 𝜋 = 78.5cm2 What mistake have I made? What is the correct answer?

4 Questions Answers and Working Out Fluency A circle has a Circumference of 28.3cm to 1 decimal place. What is the diameter of the circle to the nearest cm? Reasoning True or false? ‘If you know the area of a circle you can find the radius.’ Give a reason (show me an example) for your answer.

7 I want to put a circular paddling pool in my square garden.
4 Question Answer & Working 0ut Problem Solving I want to put a circular paddling pool in my square garden. The paddling pool has an area of 10.2m2 (to 1 decimal place.) How wide does my garden have to be for the paddling pool to fit? Print slides 3-10 two slides to a page. 10.2m2

5 Questions Answers and Working Out Fluency Reasoning Explain how you would go about calculating the area of this shape. (What information would you need? What working out would you do?) 12cm Find the area of this semi-circle. Show all your working out.

9 Look at the diagram of the running track below.
5 Question Answer & Working 0ut Problem Solving Look at the diagram of the running track below. The straight part of the track is 100m long and the width across the track is 62m. The ends of the track are semi-circular. If I run around the track, how far will I have to run? Give your answer to 2 decimal places. Print slides 3-10 two slides to a page. 62m 100m

10 Use the space below to set yourself a question similar to the ones you were able to answer confidently. Use the space below to answer the question that you have set yourself My own question… My answer…

11 Area and Circumference of Circles
5 4 3 2 1 Area and Circumference of Circles I can label the Radius, Diameter and Circumference of a circle. I know roughly how many times bigger the Circumference is than the Diameter and I can use this information to roughly estimate the Circumference of a Circle. I can use 𝜋 to calculate the area and circumference of a circle. I can use the formulae for the Area and Circumference of a circle to calculate the radius or diameter when I know the Area or the Circumference. I can use 𝜋 to find the Area and Perimeter of a semi circle and a quarter of a circle.

12 My teachers probing question My answer
What I will do to act upon my ‘Even Better If’’ comment Strategy Tick / Comments Complete a mymaths lesson or booster pack Use a revision guide or text book Ask my teacher to explain during a lesson Ask a peer to explain during a lesson Ask someone at home to help Attend a revision session at school Attend homework club Something else (describe your strategy here) Dialogue marking sheet.
