Investigation of adsorption-dependent optical refractive index of microporous MFI zeolite thin films for development of in situ chemical sensors Hai Xiao, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, MO Objective: Our recent work reveals that microporous zeolites process the unique combination of chemical and optical properties that are idea for development of highly sensitive and selective chemical sensors. However, further improvement of the sensor performance requires an in-depth understanding of the optical behavior of zeolites upon interaction with various chemicals. In this project, we aim to conduct the fundamental research of characterizing the adsorption-dependent optical refractive index of various zeolite thin films for the purposes of chemical sensor development and optimization. Major accomplishments: High quality Zeolite thin films have be grown on fiber endface and cylindrical surface for optical-chemical sensor development Molecular Adsorption induced refractive index and dimension changes have been accurately characterized Zeolite thin film coated long period fiber grating (LPFG) sensors have been developed and successfully demonstrated for highly sensitive chemical vapor detection Next goal: Characterize and understand the adsorption preference
