It gives us great pleasure to announce that our Trust has won the Improving Value Through Innovative Financial Management or Procurement award at last week’s Health Service Journal awards We developed a programme of work with a focus on achieving savings in a clinically led, joined up, inclusive way that is being embedded into the DNA of the organisation to balance and complement patient experience and quality delivery. This is allowing us to move towards sustainability in an aligned, driven and transparent way. The programme has demonstrated a step change in cost improvement.
For 2016/2017 savings are forecast to be greater than £13.5m, compared to £8-10m previously. The judges were impressed with the outstanding turnaround in a phenomenal time period, through a fundamental change in culture and leadership.
Aaron Cummins, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Finance, said: “This is a great achievement and a reflection of the efforts all of our teams have made in the design and delivery of our Sustainability Programme. A real focus on re-setting our relationship with money and a commitment to improve quality, safety and experience for our patients has resulted in some great work and it’s great that this has been recognised.”

Burdett Trust Awards 2018
SHORTLISTED
Mental Health Nursing Category
The Health Early Action Team at the RLI were shortlisted for their joint working with our mental health trust partners and improving the care of patients with mental health and substance misuse who frequently attend the Emergency Department.
The team won £2,500, to be spent on team training, education or professional development.

5. Public Sector Paperless Awards
SHORTLISTED
Big Data Project of the Year-
‘Cross-Organisational Morecambe Bay Clinical Pathway Analytics Project’
To recognise big data paperless systems and processes that provide quick, transparent and effective analytics to support better decision-making.
The I3 team’s project is currently delivering clinically-focused and patient-level data analysis to GPs, acute clinicians and other clinical staff within the Morecambe Bay health and social care system to allow for more joined up care, and enable the different organisations to work together as part of the Bay Health and Care Partners transformation strategy.

RCNi Nurse Awards 2018
SHORTLISTED
Joann Morse and the RN Degree Apprenticeship team were named as a finalist for the Leadership Award in the 2018 Royal College of Nursing Institute Awards for the Registered Nurse Degree-Level Apprenticeship scheme, which is a joint initiative between UHMBT and the University of Cumbria.
The apprenticeship scheme is among the first of its kind in the UK, and will see those recruited to the roles combine vocational training with accredited qualifications on their journey to full-time roles within the Trust.

The ‘Cultural Transformation at Morecambe Bay’ project was named a finalist for the Academi Wales Award for Excellence in Organisational Development.
This award recognises an OD initiative or project that has significantly benefited the organisation through improved effectiveness or viability.

8. The Morecambe Visitor’s Sunshine Awards 2018
SHORTLISTED
Health Hero Award Category
Rheumatology Nurse Specialists Maggie Thorne and Anne Craig
This award recognises an individual for excellence in healthcare, in the public, private or voluntary sector.
Maggie and Anne were named runners-up for their tremendous fundraising efforts for Alzheimer's/dementia.
They joined a team who trekked the Great Wall of China to help raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s.

WON AND NOMINATED
NHS England launched an exciting awards scheme for MPs to find and nominate ‘health heroes’ in their constituency.
Trust partners Cumbria Health on Call received the Parliamentary Award for Excellence in Primary Care.
Two UHMBT staff members were nominated:
Care and Compassion Award- Ameeta Joshi, Consultant in Surgery & Critical Care Group
Lifetime Achievement Award- Lesley Ryan, Paediatric Nurse Practitioner
Susan Blakemore, CHoC Chief Executive, said “it is an amazing achievement which recognises the hard work and dedication of the whole CHoC team who provide outstanding and responsive care to the population of Cumbria. This is a fantastic accolade to the NHS here in Cumbria, both within CHoC and all of our partner organisations.”

University of Cumbria Students’ Union Salute Awards
WINNERS IN TWO CATEGORIES
Society of the Year- Midwifery Society
Two student midwives at UHMBT Hayley Savage and Sarah Baker have won awards for the fantastic Midwifery Society which they organise and run. The society puts on conferences and study days for both Student midwives and qualified midwives across Cumbria.
Representatives of the Year
Another UHMBT student midwife Lesley Agyemang won student rep of the year.

11. Cavell Nurses’ Trust Star Awards Click to go back to the Cabinet
AWARDED
Jane Tomlinson-Wightman, Lead Midwife Safe and Active Birth, has been awarded a Cavell Star medal for showing exceptional care and going above and beyond for her colleagues. Jane has trained in her own time and at her own expense in complementary therapies and stays after work to offer reflexology and massage to stressed maternity staff.

ENEI Awards 2018
HIGHLY COMMENDED
The Workforce Team was awarded “Highly Commended” in the Apprenticeships category of the Employers’ Network for Equality and Inclusion Awards 2018.
This award recognises an organisation which has committed to delivering quality apprenticeships.
Apprenticeship work was undertaken in all specialities, including the popular Nurse Degree, Healthcare Science Associate, and development of our new Leadership & Management Academy. Clinical Healthcare Apprentices, Catering, Business Admin and Engineering programmes were also included within the submission.

14. The Lord Carter Award for Innovation 2018
The Lord Carter Award for Innovation is presented to an NHS Trust or organisation that best demonstrates one or more of the following:
Use of innovation and/or innovative practices in delivering substantial savings, efficiencies and carbon reductions to the Trust
Delivering operational efficiencies and savings through the introduction of new engineering innovative technologies.
Evidence of transformation of staff practices through the introduction of new technology or innovative working practices.

Morecambe Bay CCG were awarded the Lord Carter Award for “Leveraging innovative patient flow technology to deliver efficient, integrated health and social care across an STP region” by The Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM)

The Surgery Team at FGH have been shortlisted for a Nursing Times Award in the Surgical Nursing Category for their submission titled “Anaesthetising  and recovering a learning disability patient in their own home”

South Cumbria Breastfeeding Support Award
AWARDED
Kimberley Jones, Staff Nurse at Furness General Hospital (FGH), has been presented with South Cumbria Breastfeeding Support’s Breast Friend Award for 2018.
This award is made to an NHS Health Professional in South Cumbria who has been nominated by a local mum for having really supported her on her breastfeeding journey.
Kimberley was nominated by local mum Christina, for the wonderful support that she received when her son Seth spent time in FGH’s Special Care Baby Unit when he was a newborn.

18. Academic Foundation Showcase Prize Click to go back to the Cabinet
WINNER
Dr Alex Newton, academic FY2 doctor, won first prize at the regional Academic Foundation Showcase.
This was an event in which all the foundation year 2 academic doctors in the North West area competed; presenting their projects and being awarded by the judges based on their presentation and project. Dr Newton’s project focused on transitioning from a medical student to foundation doctor. He was presented with his award at the regional meeting held at Wythenshawe Hospital on 4th July 2018.

19. BBC Radio Lancashire Community Heroes Awards
FINALIST
The Carnforth Serenity Café which is a community led initiative for people struggling with mental health issues has gone from strength to strength resulting in a nomination to Radio Lancashire Local Hero's awards for which the organiser became a finalist.
Jayne Collins launched The Serenity Café in Carnforth in 2016 to give people who live with a mental health condition(s) a safe place where they can find peer support or just some company and a cup of tea.
Dr Andy Knox, local Carnforth GP and Director of Population health and engagement at Morecambe Bay Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We are so pleased that she is being recognised for all her hard work with this nomination, and we are very proud of how much she has achieved, whatever the outcome on the night!”

20. Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme
SILVER AWARD
The Trust has been awarded for the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award 2018.
The Trust has been recognised for its on-going support to Reservists, Cadets, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers as well as Regular Service personnel who are also employed by UHMBT.
The Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) was launched in 2014 to reward employers who support Defence People objectives and encourage others to exhibit the same behaviours.
