A revolution in intellectual activity… changed Europeans view of government & society

3 Why it matters now The foundation of our liberal democracy is the result of Enlightenment thinking. (Our founding fathers were inspired by Enlightenment thinking)

4 Enlightenment A new intellectual movement that stressed reason and thought.

5 Social contract Agreement between people and government.

6 setting the stage As a result of the scientific revolution great thinkers began to question traditional forms of government.

If government does more than that, then people can break contract or elect new government.

The Enlightenment thinkers continued a process of challenging the staus quo. Like Martin Luther challnged the church, enlightenment thinkers challenged kings andthe old order. Rethinking government and its power and authroity, led to people wanting to change the old order.
